How to tell if your collagen levels are decreasing
You have been making Collagen your whole life it is "the most plentiful protein" in the human body, spread throughout your
As you age, your body makes less collagen and this slow-down starts in your 20s.
Unfortunately, by the time you are 30, you will have lost about 10% of your collagen levels and once you factor in lifestyle factors such as stress, alcohol, UV exposure or an unhealthy diet, your collagen levels will likely decline even quicker.
This means that by the age of 50, you may have lost about 50% of your collagen levels.?This causes a variety of conditions that unfortunately I see many people just accepting as part of getting older and it absolutely doesn’t have to be this way!
The loss of collagen affects the way you look, feel and function.?The first signs of collagen loss may be subtle so the earlier you start the better.?However, it is possible to replenish your collagen at any age and have positive results as I have seen with numerous clients.
Results include wrinkles decreasing, brown spots disappearing, joints improving, shorter injury recovery times, improved gut health and the list goes on and on
As the amount of collagen decreases all parts of your body suffer and signs of collagen loss include:
·????????wrinkled skin due to elasticity loss
·????????stiff joints - cartilage wears out and is not repaired as it should be
·????????Ulcers and digestive problems.
·????????Bones – become weaker and more fragile
·????????Muscles – function decreases affecting mobility and balance
1. Joint Pain
As you start losing collagen, joints begin taking more wear and tear and don’t repair as quickly as they should.?Eventually, they may start hurting during everyday activities.
2. Sagging Skin
Since collagen provides elasticity in your skin, as it starts decreasing so does the firmness of your skin. You may notice the sagging effect on your jawline, cheeks, buttocks, and stomach.
3. Wrinkles and Fine Lines
Loss of collagen leads to the dehydration and thinning of the skin which results in wrinkles and fine lines.
4. Lifeless Hair
As the amount of collagen starts decreasing, hair could begin to split and break.?Hair begins to thin and stops looking as healthy as it did before and you may also notice hair loss.

5. Weight Gain
The decrease in collagen could slow your metabolism. As a result, you may start gaining weight even if you don’t change your eating habits.
6. Teeth Problems
Collagen plays a vital role in anchoring your teeth to gums.?You may start having problems with your teeth, such as pain, sensitivity, and premature decay.
7. Weak Blood Vessel Walls
As the collagen levels decrease, so does the strength of the blood vessels walls. You may experience, dry eyes, headaches, breathing problems, skin rashes and more.
What lifestyle habits damage collagen?
Even though Collagen loss is a natural process, UV exposure, pollution, bad habits, stress and poor diet choices speed up the process.
Smoking: decreases collagen production, it damages collagen and elastin, leading to wrinkles and slow wound healing.?Nicotine constricts blood vessels near your skin’s surface, preventing the delivery of oxygen and nutrients.
Sugar and Refined Carbs:?Sugar attaches to proteins and molecules are created that damage nearby proteins and cause collagen to become weak, dry and brittle.
Exposure to ultraviolet light: Too much sunlight reduces collagen production and caused collagen to break down more rapidly.?Avoid excessive sun exposure but remember you need 15 minutes a day to get your Vitamin D.
Other factors that damage collagen
Autoimmune diseases can damage collagen such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus and scleroderma.
Genetic mutations can also damage collagen such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
Collagen is one of the most important proteins in your body and maintaining sufficient levels is vital for your health and appearance.
While it’s possible to accelerate collagen loss, it’s also possible to slow it down so keep an eye out for the next article where I will show you how you can slow down your collagen loss and slow down the signs of aging
