Is collaborative funding for a long-term pipeline of infrastructure achievable?

Is collaborative funding for a long-term pipeline of infrastructure achievable?

Thank you to Mayors Paula Southgate , Mayor Jacqui Church JP, Moko Tepania and Campbell Barry who I had the privilege of spending time with at this year's #FutureRoadsNZ symposium.

Some of the common themes that I picked up on were:?

  • That our funding system for infrastructure to support local communities is in crisis, including roading.
  • There is a desperate need for local Government to have access to different funding mechanisms.
  • This is not helped when central and local Government funding timetables don’t align, such as National Transport Funding and Council Long Term Planning.
  • Contestable funding with central Government needs a rethink towards a more collaborative or unified approach.
  • Mayors united on the need to take politics out of infrastructure prioritisation.
  • Towards 20–30-year pipeline planning, even 100 year, (thank you Moko Tepania ) if we were to take a truly custodial view of our environment and future communities.
  • That will result in long term national and sub regional infrastructure certainty.? ?

But my biggest take away was on Mayors as people and leaders, of the commitment and dedication of people who put themselves forward to shape and lead a better outcome for communities.?

Thank you for your willingness to engage deeply with me and our industry on solutions to challenges of infrastructure funding, resilience, climate change, security of supply and cost of delivery.

Maioha nui | huge thanks and appreciation.

In some ways, hearing all of these situations that do not serve us exist is no surprise, and I can only imagine how hard it might be to change them while at the same time getting what needs to be done, done. It sounds like there is more than just appetite for change and I'd suggest those closest to it are likely to best know what good would look like in a future design n align of all/any matters to central and local govt enabling the budgeting and provision of the services that they themselves want to achieve in their role of responsibility, along with enjoy as a tax and rate payer themselves. In short, I am sure that all those in the mix have the same expectations as the constituents they serve. Are their any plans afoot to make the changes related to your observations, and who or what ultimately can enable said change? Ministers / Policy / Councillors?

Thanks for the summation Maurice, it was great forum to hear directly from the Mayors. Their frankness towards the challenges had many similarities, it was also interesting to hear and understand the unique differences and priorities that urban and rural communities each have.?

Great discussion Maurice and very well chaired. Really enjoyed the open and candid korero by the mayors. Brace yourself Kiwi’s if we want to build a great and resilient Aotearoa - we are actually going to have to pay for it.

Thanks for the update Maurice, will look forward to seeing a few more details of the incoming Government's plans around funding in particular, including City/region deals.
