Collaboration is power

This week, New York City has been the beating heart of international climate diplomacy. With policymakers, asset managers, private sector climate champions, and heads of state from more than 130 countries, Manhattan is the place to be for the latest trends and developments in big energy and green financing. But Climate Week NYC is more than just talks and debates. In the context of the United Nations General Assembly, NYCW provides a pivotal platform for shaping a successful outcome at COP29 in Baku, unveiling a range of transformative initiatives and powerful new alliances.

One such initiative is New York State’s announcement to join the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA). Launched by Denmark, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) at COP27, the multi-stakeholder alliance includes 20 governments among its members, aiming to accelerate the global deployment of offshore wind power. GWEC’s research suggests the world could meet GOWA’s target of 380 GW of offshore wind by 2030, but only with the right frameworks in place.

Beyond wind energy, the drive for robust international frameworks extends to the maritime sector, with industry leaders seizing the moment to address decarbonisation. At the UN Headquarters, business leaders called on all International Maritime Organization (IMO) Member States to support a global regulatory framework that, in a just, inclusive, ambitious, and timely manner, accelerates the use of zero and near-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) fuels.

In terms of financing, NYCW also serves as a platform for new pledges and priorities. At the opening session of the United Nations General Assembly, Denmark pledged USD 491.7 million to the World Bank's IDA fund for debt-strapped low-income countries, representing a 40% increase over the country's previous contribution. World Bank President Ajay Banga said the donation will have a "tangible impact on people's lives," adding that every dollar raised by IDA can be multiplied fourfold through the bank's borrowing capacity.

With financial commitments, new alliances and ambitious regulatory calls, Climate Week NYC is setting the tone for a future where international cooperation is the engine that drives forward the green transition.
