Cold Case Murder Investigation

Conducting a cold case murder investigation can be a challenging task, best left to the few members of the Association of British Investigators (ABI) with the right skill and experience.

The ABI provides here some general steps that the right professional investigators can take to try to solve the case:

1.????Gather and review all available evidence:

This includes any physical evidence such as DNA, fingerprints, or weapons, as well as witness statements, police reports, and other documents related to the case.

2.????Re-interview witnesses:

Witnesses may have new information or may be willing to talk about the case now that some time has passed.

3.????Use advanced investigative techniques:

Advances in forensic science may allow for re-testing of evidence using modern methods that were not available at the time of the crime.

4.????Utilise technology:

Utilise technology such as facial recognition, licence plate readers, and social media to gather new leads and information.

5.????Expand the investigation:

Review any potential connections to other cases or individuals who may have been involved.

6.????Work with the community:

Ask the community for help, use media or social media to raise awareness and encourage people to come forward with information.

7.????Stay organised:

Keep detailed records of all the information you gather and the steps you take in the investigation.

8.????Review the original investigation:

Review the original investigation and identify any potential errors or omissions that may have occurred. It is important to identify any mistakes that may have been made and correct them.

9.????Identify potential suspects:

Revisit potential suspects and alibis and consider any new leads or evidence that may have emerged. It may be helpful to create a timeline of events leading up to the crime to help identify potential suspects.

10.?Use psychological profiling:

Psychological profiling can be used to identify potential suspects based on their behaviour, motivations, and personality traits.

11.?Work with other agencies:

If possible and permitted, work with other law enforcement agencies, such as the National Crime Agency or local police, to utilise their resources and expertise in solving the case.

12.?Offer rewards:

Offer a monetary reward or other incentives for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator.

13.?Keep the victim's family informed:

Keep the victim's family informed of any updates or progress in the investigation. This can help to provide closure and reduce their anxiety.

It is important to note that each case is unique, and the approach to solving it may vary.

Remember that cold case investigations can be complex and time-consuming, but with persistence, attention to detail, and the use of modern investigative techniques, it is possible for the skilled ABI professional investigators to solve even the most difficult case

My file is almost ready to send to Police Scotland. The Crown Office have been their usual helpful selves, the offers of help often evaporated, but the original witnesses were keen to engage. The police, obdurate and dishonest, even the area commander who reviewed the case had no recollection as he continues to polish his pension in another role in Edinburgh. My subject didn’t commit suicide, she was murdered but it is at the behest of the authorities if they care to review the evidence we will submit.
