Coinbase is cutting a fifth of its workforce
Terrific Thursday, FinTech Fanatic!
2023 has been the year of layoffs so far, as yet another company in the FinTech scene announces a major round of job cuts.
Following Genesis and Railsr earlier this week, this time it is crypto exchange Coinbase that plans to cut 950 jobs , according to a blog post published Tuesday morning.
This is Coinbase ’s second major round of layoffs in a short period of time, after it already lowered staff by over 18% in June last year.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong pointed to recent pressure on the crypto sector thanks to “unscrupulous actors in the industry,” referring to bankrupt exchange FTX and its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried .?
“The FTX collapse and the resulting contagion have created a black eye for the industry,” he said, adding there are likely more “shoes to drop.”
That brings me automatically to Binance , as the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange is struggling to hold onto assets .
Investors have been pulling their crypto in recent weeks, and despite assurance from CEO Changpeng Zhao that the situation had stabilized, outflows are accelerating.
According to data from crypto data firm Defillama , customers withdrew a net $360 million last Friday.
Cryptocurrency markets have been rocked in recent months following the collapse of FTX, and this definitely will not be the latest sign of pain in the cryptocurrency industry.
To end on a positive note: during the “holiday season,” a total amount of €64.3m was raised across 8 European FinTech deals.
