The Cognitive Shift: How GenAI is Reshaping Work and Intelligence

Over the last two decades, I have worked extensively in the BFSI sector, building AI/ML-driven solutions that streamline operations, enhance fraud detection, and optimize decision-making processes. From leading AI-driven anomaly detection in banking to implementing real-time fraud prevention systems, I have seen firsthand how Generative AI (GenAI) is reshaping the way financial institutions and enterprises operate.

But with this transformation comes a fundamental question—are we at risk of "cognitive collapse"? Are we unknowingly creating a workforce that relies too heavily on AI, losing the ability to think critically and solve complex problems independently?

In this article, I’ll share my insights into how GenAI is impacting BFSI and enterprises, the potential risks of over-reliance, and the strategies organizations must adopt to maintain a balance between human intelligence and AI-driven efficiency.


The Promise of GenAI in BFSI and Enterprises

Having worked with large financial institutions, I’ve seen how AI adoption has accelerated in recent years. Here are some of the most significant ways AI is transforming the industry:

1. Real-Time Fraud Detection & Prevention

Case Study: JP Morgan Chase JP Morgan uses AI-powered fraud detection algorithms that analyze millions of transactions daily. By identifying anomalies in real time, the bank has significantly reduced fraudulent transactions, saving billions in potential losses.

My Experience: When I worked on AI-powered fraud detection for a retail bank, we leveraged AI to track transaction patterns, flagging unusual behavior in real-time. However, we ensured human oversight for critical decision-making to avoid false positives that could impact genuine customers.

2. AI-Powered Credit Risk Assessment

Case Study: ZestFinance ZestFinance, a fintech company, uses AI to assess creditworthiness beyond traditional credit scores. Their AI models analyze alternative data, such as spending habits and digital footprints, to make lending decisions.

Case Study: Lemonade Insurance Lemonade, an AI-driven insurance company, processes claims in seconds using AI models. The system verifies claims, assesses risks, and initiates payouts without human intervention for straightforward cases.

My Experience: While automation accelerates claims processing, I’ve always recommended that insurers keep human experts involved in complex cases. AI should handle routine claims, but nuanced cases—such as disputed claims—should involve human judgment to avoid bias and errors.

5. AI-Driven Regulatory Compliance in BFSI

While GenAI is a game-changer, I have serious concerns about the potential decline in human cognitive abilities due to over-reliance on AI.

If financial analysts rely too much on AI-driven investment insights without questioning them, they risk making flawed decisions. I’ve seen AI misinterpret market signals due to outdated training data, reinforcing why human oversight remains essential.

2. Loss of Domain Expertise in Insurance & Lending

As AI handles more underwriting and credit risk decisions, professionals may lose the deep expertise required to assess complex cases. I strongly believe that organizations should rotate employees through AI and traditional roles to maintain their analytical skills.

3. AI Bias & Ethical Risks

AI models can unintentionally reinforce biases in lending, hiring, or insurance claims. I have worked with financial institutions where biased AI models led to unfair loan denials. To prevent this, organizations must constantly audit AI decisions for fairness and transparency.

4. Overdependence on AI in Cybersecurity

Cybercriminals are using AI to bypass AI-driven security systems. While AI-powered threat detection is critical, human security analysts must always validate AI alerts to avoid breaches.


Balancing AI and Human Intelligence in BFSI and Enterprises

1. AI as an Augmenter, Not a Replacement

AI should assist, not replace, human decision-making. In my experience, AI models that include human feedback loops perform better over time.

2. Continuous AI Literacy & Upskilling

Organizations should train employees to critically evaluate AI-generated insights rather than accept them blindly. I advocate for mandatory AI ethics and literacy programs in BFSI institutions.

3. Human-AI Collaboration in Decision-Making

In fraud detection, credit scoring, and investment analysis, AI should provide recommendations, but humans should make the final call. This is the best way to ensure responsible AI adoption.

4. Ethical AI Governance Frameworks

Banks and insurers must implement AI governance frameworks to ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability. I have advised financial institutions to conduct regular AI audits to detect biases and flaws.

5. AI in Strategic Thinking, Not Just Automation

Instead of using AI only for automation, BFSI leaders should leverage AI for strategic insights. AI should enhance human decision-making, not replace it.
