Cognitive Mapping
?
Effective generalisation of skills and knowledge is the key difference between recalling discrete facts and applying information in a meaningful way – solving a chemical equation or analysing an English text.
Cognitive Mapping, once considered to be the brain’s way of organising information about the physical world only, is increasingly acknowledged as being key to generalising abstract concepts as well as ‘orienting’ our cognition - 'Where am I within the learning process, and how do I take the next step?'
Teaching students how to use tools such as mind maps and the Feynman Technique (elaborative techniques within the context of study skills) is useful. Teaching them what their brains are actually doing ‘behind the scenes’ puts them in the driving seat of learning. An empowering place to be.
