On Faudree Road in Odessa, Texas, CPL Rays Coffee serves as more than just a coffee shop. It's a hub for veterans seeking friendship and support. Every second Tuesday of the month, veterans gather here for coffee meetups, hosted by Roy Dobbins and Lewis Hinojos , with Permian Warrior Partnership (PWP). These gatherings provide a space for Veterans to network, seek support with various challenges they might be facing, learn how they can impact others in our community and most of all, understand that they are not alone and that they have support in their new mission in life. I was blessed this past Tuesday 02/13/2024 to attend my first "Coffee with Sarge." It was without a doubt, an eye opening experience.
For veterans transitioning to corporate life, the loss of that Brotherhood found in the military can be challenging. According to a report by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, around 30% of veterans experience feelings of loneliness and isolation. However, regular social interactions, such as those facilitated by Permian Warrior Partnership, can help soften these feelings. Research by the RAND Corporation indicates that strong social support networks are associated with better mental health and a much higher success rate in veteran to civilian transitions, reducing the risk of depression and anxiety.
Networking is essential for veterans seeking employment or business opportunities post-military service. Studies from Syracuse University 's Institute for Veterans and Military Families show that over 80% of job seekers find employment through networking. As a Veteran this can be your greatest challenge in transitioning to the corporate sector, due to not having connections in the industry you are seeking employment in. Event's like Coffee with Sarge can lead to job referrals, business relationships, and valuable career insights, that can help you better your position in the corporate world.
Transitioning from military to civilian life can be mentally taxing. The stress of adapting to new routines and responsibilities can take a toll on veterans' mental well-being. However, regular social interactions, such as Tuesdays coffee, can offer much-needed relief. Research published in the Journal of Affective Disorders suggests that social support plays a significant role in reducing symptoms of PTSD among veterans. By providing a supportive environment where veterans can share their experiences and seek guidance, these meetups contribute to mental wellness and resilience.
Building meaningful relationships is essential for veterans as they navigate civilian life. PWP's meetups foster an environment where Veterans can form lasting friendships and business relationships. A study by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families - IVMF states that over 70% of veterans report feeling a sense of camaraderie with other veterans. Even after leaving the ranks as a soldier they are drawn to other Veterans because of past experiences and understanding of one another. These bonds can lead to opportunities for mentorship, and emotional support, enhancing veterans' chances in a smooth transition.
Education and access to resources are vital for veterans seeking to improve their lives post-service. Listening to guest speakers who provide information on topics such as mental health, financial planning, and VA benefits are great ways to expand your knowledge. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) , peer-led support groups can be highly effective in promoting mental wellness among veterans. By offering access to other Veteran organizations, advice and resources, these meetups help Veterans make informed decisions and navigate challenges more effectively.
In conclusion, PWP and CPL Rays Coffee are doing something for Veterans that we should all support. The Permian Basin is a better place because of them and I myself, will do anything in my power to continue showing support. From forging friendships to learning new things, the benefits of these meetups are immeasurable. If you are a newly transitioning Veteran, a Veteran who has been out for years, or a Veteran supporter in the Midland / Odessa area, I highly recommend you come out and join PWP next month. It is an experience like no other.
