Is Coffee Really a Healthy Option?

The beginning of a new year is often the time to get things back on track, with ‘eat more healthily’ at the top of many people’s new year’s resolution lists, here’s how coffee can help you reach your goals.

If you’re following a healthy lifestyle, then the good news is that you don’t have to give up coffee. Phew! In fact, coffee fits well into a healthy eating plan. It contains various nutrients including potassium and anti-oxidants which can help support digestive and heart health. Studies have shown that drinking a moderate amount of coffee (two to four cups) may help protect against neurodegenerative diseases and support brain health. It may even help reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by regulating your blood sugar balance. Coffee also stimulates the production of the hormone gastrin, used by the digestive system, and hydrochloric acid which is one of the constituents of gastric juice. These substances help to break down food in the stomach for better digestion – that’s why there’s such a long tradition of drinking coffee after meals.

It’s best not to make an immediate dash for the latte machine, though – if you’re drinking coffee as part of a healthy lifestyle then adding too much cream and sugar can undo your good work. Black coffee contains only five calories a mug, while adding a dash of skimmed or semi-skimmed milk will only add around 20 to 35 calories a cup. Unsweetened oat and soya milk are good alternatives, as well.
