Coffee & Digital Transformation
I have become an avid coffee drinker since starting my professional career over 20 years ago. During this time, my taste preferences have changed, and so has my coffee additives. Some by choice and others, well, let's just say it's in the best interest of everyone around me.
In 2010, I purchased a Bezzera BZ40 and had this machined plumbed into my kitchen. The machine has been flawless for over ten years, and it is by far the hardest working appliance in the house. Fun fact, the first machine for making espresso was built in the early 1900s by Luigi Bezzera.
While I do enjoy my coffee, what I enjoy just as much, if not more, is the ritual of preparing and making the coffee. The sight of the machine extracting coffee under 9bars of pressure with the sound and smell that expel stimulate the senses, which provides an unusual feeling of gratification.?Furthermore, it's where I can gain valuable feedback to learn, adjust and continually improve the process and the final deliverable.

...it is in the journey where all the tremendous hard work and magic occurs.
I have learnt to appreciate and value the journey just as much as the destination. I draw to the similarity that of any digital transformation initiative. While the vision for the digital transformation is apparent and teams strive to arrive at this destination, it is in the journey where all the tremendous hard work and magic occurs. I also find it to be a place where the excitement is, the camaraderie and the team rally together for excellence and a place where all the learning and personal growth happens.
As leaders delivering business capability through digital transformation, we can quickly lose sight of the importance of the journey and focus on the destination. As a reminder to myself and other leaders privileged to lead teams along transformation journeys, I suggest:

3 年Love it Hani !! I’m surprised we didn’t get onto the topic of coffee when we caught up at the CIO50 awards. I absolutely can relate to the morning ritual. I have a Giotto rocket and a rancilio grinder, and would be lost without them…

3 年Fantastic analogy, Hani. Its a good reminder that we can bring the right tools and the right ingredients, but a key skill is in understanding and responding to the environment. The deft change manager, and passionate barista will already be aware there is likely a storm coming today, and adjustments must be made to the grind.
