Hello solutions seekers! ?
This is just a small note to say thank you for reading The Solutionists.
In many ways, telling these stories and sharing them within our circles helps to elevate the work of young people who are fighting to make our world a better place.
As a one-woman band, it's been encouraging to see more and more people subscribe to the newsletter and reach out to share new stories, and feedback, about this publication.
The best part of my work is talking about change and telling stories from innovators who are making a difference. Feel inspired, stay informed, and be encouraged that there is some positive change in our world and it's not all doom and gloom.
Thank you for being solution seekers!
????♀? Women Rebuilding Ukraine ????
In #Ukraine, women are coming together, picking up tools, and learning construction skills. From all professions and age groups, these women have stepped up to rebuild damaged homes and restore hope within their communities. Since the war in Ukraine began in 2022, thousands of homes and buildings have been damaged, but this movement of citizens, called Repair Together, has is determined to do something about the situation.
There are around 4,000 volunteers who turn up to clear debris and rebuild homes. Repair Together also keep developing new projects to help people who have lost everything during the war. So far they've cleaned up more than 120 houses in 15 villages and repaired 30 houses. They have also built 7 new houses from scratch and put many families back in their homes. https://www.repair-together.com/home/

???? Plastic Import Ban
Thailand has officially banned the import of plastic waste, marking a major step in its fight against toxic pollution. After years of activism, the new law came into effect this month, addressing a long-standing issue where #Thailand has been used as a dumping ground for plastic waste by wealthier nations. In 2018, #China stopped accepting plastic waste from other countries. Places like the US, UK, Japan, and Europe were then forced to send more waste to Thailand.
Between 2018 and 2021, Thai customs reported over 1.1 million tonnes of plastic scrap entering the country. Thailand’s decision sends a strong message: the time to rethink plastic waste is now and push for global action to address the issue at its source. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/jan/07/thailand-bans-imports-plastic-waste-curb-toxic-pollution

???? No To The Death Penalty
Zimbabwe has abolished the death penalty marking a historic step towards justice and humanity.
The president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, approved the law following a parliamentary vote, making it effective immediately. International organisations have celebrated the decision as a beacon of hope for the region and a powerful statement of the nation’s commitment to fairness and human rights.
While Zimbabwe hasn't carried out executions since 2005, about 60 people on death row will now have their sentences reviewed. Worldwide, 113 countries, including 24 across Africa, have completely abolished the death penalty. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn8gqz7n559o?ref=fixthenews.com

?? Bolivia Women Driving Change
Female driven taxis in Bolivia are helping to provide safe spaces for women to travel. ????
There’s a lot of violence against women, a lot of discrimination. Women and girl are often expected to stay home at home assisting our husbands and are not really expected to drive. However, an organisation launched the Lilac Line in 2021 to train women so they could earn a source of income and sustain their families.
More than 50,000 cases of gender violence were reported in 2023 in Bolivia so this service is not just empowering the women who driving but offering a safer option for women to travel. https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2024/dec/03/women-female-taxi-services-safety-independence-to-bolivia-travel

??Money For A Coffee Cup
Pisture this - you sip your coffee, finish it, and instead of tossing your cup in the rubbish, you pop it into a sleek deposit machine on the street so that they can be recycled. That's exactly what’s happening in Aarhus, Denmark, where over 700,000 cups were returned just last year! ??
People I get five Danish crowns (about 70 euro cents) in their account after a coffee cup deposit. 45% of Aarhus’s trash was takeaway packaging, and these deposit machines, created by Norwegian company TOMRA, are hoping to turn change this.
Other European countries such as Romania, and Belgium have introduced deposit systems that enable people to return plastic or glass bottles and cans to designated machines in supermarket chains, where they are rewarded with a small refund in return which seems to be working. https://www.euronews.com/green/2025/01/11/people-are-paid-to-return-coffee-cups-in-this-danish-city-does-it-work

?? Does This Work ?
The world’s largest plant for removing carbon dioxide from the air in Iceland called "Mammoth," is a groundbreaking facility that is ten times bigger than a previous plant, "Orca," which opened in 2021. ??
Using a process called direct air capture (DAC), the plant pulls in air and removes carbon dioxide from it with the help of chemicals. The captured carbon is then stored underground, where it naturally turns into stone, locking it away permanently! ??
The operation, powered by Iceland’s clean geothermal energy, is part of a partnership with local company Carbfix, which handles the underground storage process. It’s a big step toward finding solutions to combat climate change.
