Mine is "Coffee and Cigarettes" – what’s your most inspirational coffee movie?

According to Hollywood movies only psychopaths, Europeans or villains do it – smoking! Despite some good habits like sharing my findings about the coffee industry, I did have some bad. One I got rid of was smoking. Even tough that is almost 20 years ago, I still have to be cautious not to fall back to old habits –actually like most ex-smokers. This goes especially when I am among my former fellow students.

It is all smoke and mirrors

Studying was mainly about studying. But it was also about sharing the fear of certain exams, creating plans for the future and smoking while doing so. And never came the smoke without a cup of coffee. Coffee and cigarettes did belong together, they were one entity, two sides of one coin.

Always I knew that having a coffee with my former fellow students is my weak spot, the moment I have to be carefull. What I did not anticipated was the movie “Coffee and Cigarettes”.

Don’t get me wrong: the movie is amazing. My problem here is that it caught me by surprise. “Coffee and Cigarettes” is not only the name, it is basically the story line. The movie from director Jim Jarmusch is about chatting people that are having caffeine-based liquids and enjoying some kind of tobacco. Seeing these people, listening to their stories and recognizing how much they are enjoying their coffee and cigarettes combinations made me want a cigarette so much I almost went to buy pack at the middle of the night.

After a short moment of weakness I got stable again.

Now I can enjoy the movie without second thoughts about cigarettes. Which is important to me, because I do really like the movie and I do not know any movie that promotes coffee pleasure as much as Jim Jarmusch’s movie.

This all came to mind while I was thinking about ideas for the coming World of Coffee Championships in Dublin in June 2016. BRITA is sponsoring the Brewer’s Cup as Official Water Sponsor and we are eager to provide a good show. One idea was to sponsor a movie night. What do you think? Any recommendations if we should do so and what we should show? As always I am happy about a personal note or a comment.

Disclaimer

The hint with the Europeans is actually from another movie: "Thank you for Smoking!”. The blog post is not counter speech for smoking or an advertisement for “Coffee & Cigarettes”, “Thank you for Smoking” or to name a third example the HBO series “Mad Men” – even though I would recommend all of them.

Movie night ... sounds good. What about "A film about coffee" (https://afilmaboutcoffee.com/)?
