Coffee to beat MS !

We are often told of the potential problems of drinking too much and eating too much and being told to always keep an eye on what we consume but here at UKVending we thought you’d like to hear some good news about coffee.

Coffee, it seems, may actually be good for us. Clearly at UKVending we love the taste, the aroma and the choice of flavours from across the globe, but Swedish scientists have now conducted studies into the health potential of regularly drinking coffee. The benefits of tea have long been known, whilst coffee has always had a, shall we say, darker and looser connection with healthy eating.

Researchers in three locations, Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, The University of Berkeley and at the world renowned John Hopkins University of Maryland have found a link to consuming around six cups of coffee daily that could offer up to a 30 percent cut in the risk of developing the debilitating disease multiple sclerosis.

Dr Emma Gray of the MS Society on hearing the announcement cautiously welcomed the news saying: “This study provides new evidence that the link between the risk of developing MS and coffee consumption is worth exploring.”

The study in Stockholm involved 1,620 adults with the disease and another 2,788 adults without it. A separate parallel study in the United States had a similar number of participants. Both studies asked the people taking part about their coffee consumption as well as how long they had been drinking coffee. The underlying analysis of the results indicated that the risk of developing MS was greater in those who did not drink coffee or who drank less than six cups a day. The American research confirmed the Swedish results.

Whilst the results are encouraging there is clearly a great deal of research needed as well as clinical trials before any new treatments for MS based on coffee consumption can be authorised.
