Code Style and Patterns on Git Commit with Angular and .NET - Part 2

In my last article, I shared how to apply a code style pattern on git commit for Angular projects. Today, I will show how to do the same for .NET Projects.
As in the previous article, we start by creating an EditorConfig file. In .NET, we use the command below to generate this file.
dotnet new editorconfig
This command creates a new file named .editorconfig. This file includes some of the same configurations as Angular projects, such as charset and indent_style set to the same values. However, it also has many other configurations specific to .NET projects that are not present in Angular projects.

After creating the .editorconfig file, you need to install the tool manifest.
dotnet new tool-manifest
This command creates a new file (dotnet-tools.json) in your projects. This file is used to specify the tools that should be available to our project.

dotnet tool install csharpier
dotnet-format is code formatter that applies style preferences and static analysis recommendations to C# projects.
csharpier is another code formatter with a more opinionated approach. It uses Roslyn to parse C# code and re-prints it according to its own formatting rules.
You can use either or both of these tools to format your C# code.
Now, we need to set up Git hooks for our project. I decided to use the same tools as in Angular projects. To do this, we'll need to start a Node package manager in our solution.
npm init
This is solely for installing and setting up our Git hooks. We'll install the same packages that we used in our Angular projects. Let's start by installing Husky.
npm install husky --save-dev
To initialize Husky, run the following command in your terminal:
npx husky init
Next, we'll install lint-staged and prettier.

Next, configure your package.json file to format specific files, such as JSON and CSS, if they exist in your project.

To ensure our code style is consistently followed, I've set up rules to eliminate redundant using directives and enforce proper naming conventions. We can enforce these rules during the build process by adding the following to our .csproj file:

<AnalysisMode>AllEnabledByDefault</AnalysisMode>
The lint-staged hook will execute the formatters and address any code style problems before committing. If there are still violations after formatting, the dotnet build command will fail, preventing the commit.
If there are no problems, the commit will be successful.
In this post, I've shown you one way to enforce a consistent code style and prevent commits that don't follow it. With Git hooks, we have other events like "pre-push" where you can run unit and integration tests before pushing, ensuring only well-tested code is sent.
