CODE RED for Britain as Labour plays its ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ card!

Forget Labour’s climate commitments – political expediency is winning over leadership and integrity.

Rachel Reeves, the shadow chancellor, shared details of Labour’s so called Green Prosperity Plan this morning on the Today programme, she talks up green jobs and renewables and then unbelievably confirms ‘there will be a role for oil and gas until the 2050s’. She also confirmed fossil fuel drilling will go on “we’re not going to stop oil and gas being drilled” and later “we will work with businesses and unions to ensure we get that oil and gas out of the ground”. When asked by the inimitable Justin Webb if Labour was sticking to its commitment not to allow any more new licences for oil and gas Rachel Reeves answered “let’s not suggest things that are just not the case”.

Labour committing to oil and gas into the 2050s? It makes the already ridiculous ‘net’ part of our country’s net zero 2050 commitment look like an all-embracing political ‘get of jail free’ card!

And this is not just anyone speaking but the person who will hold the purse strings our great country for 5 years if Labour triumphs at the next general election – the Last Election for Climate.

Originally Labour committed to £28 billion per year to build their green prosperity plan but Rachel Reeves in the same interview now backed off from this – Justin Webb suggesting this is due to Labour being frightened by the bond markets. Rachel then confirmed Labour will not get to that investment until the second half of the next term of parliament. That is 2027 at the earliest and could be as far away as 2029! Are they joking? It is a sick and dangerous joke if it is, and no young people are laughing.

The carbon budget from the IPCC set out in the conservative conclusions of Assessment Report 6 runs out in 2028 at the current rates of global emissions (but still giving a 1 in 5 chance of breaching 1.5C). The message for Labour is WE DO NOT HAVE TIME TO WAIT UNTIL 2029!

Rachel Reeves also made warm noises about the opportunities for Britain and British businesses. Britain will not become great again unless we lead the Decarbonisation Revolution. Leadership requires integrity, bravery and a clear focus.

2050 net zero (whatever ‘net’ means under Labour) will not unleash British businesses as it does not provide certainty (but it does allow politicians to backtrack on commitments and promises). For Britain to lead the Decarbonisation Revolution we need to grip the nettle and go for it.

2030 is Britain’s target (it should be) giving us focus, allowing industry to know where it needs to get to, stiffening politicians resolve to get the job done and providing financiers in the City with clear direction. When we reach 2030, we will be ‘the’ World leader, leading in innovative carbon zero engineering, leading in low carbon homes, leading in climate finance and with the World market at our feet. Carbon zero by 2030 will mean energy security, food security and no cost of living crisis.

It is simply inevitable that the World will decarbonise. Britain can either lead or be at the back of the pack, as our main political parties want us to be, and continue paying China for our solar panels. The two main parties have no backbone, getting elected at the next election is their only aim and political expediency is their game.

A message for you, Rachel Reeves, from the Climate Party “we are coming after you”.

The British public need a new option at the next election, a party that is brave, focussed and clear about its aim. Britain’s place in the Decarbonisation Revolution must be at the front! ?

Britain will lead on climate action, no ‘ifs’, no ‘buts’ and no U-turns.?

It’s the issue of this generation and needs to be confronted. I am not minded to trust anyone without critical inspection. People do what you inspect not expect. I see enough unfulfilled promises.
