I just saw this from Joe Calloway...

  • You can’t claim to be an effective leader today if you are not thinking about what disruption means for your business. We can develop a false sense of security if our businesses are doing well and our best customers love us. But more and more often we find that “We’re doing great!” turn out to be famous last words. Do the thought exercise with your team of asking the question, “What might put us out of business in the next three years?” See where it takes you. It just might take you to your next big opportunity. A leader today has to be willing to do more than tweak and improve what already exists. She’s got to be willing to possibly put herself out of business for the sake of getting to the next opportunity. #disruption?#leadership?#advisor

Seems Joe is inspiring me a bit more over the last week in particular. He consistently does, but this week, hmmm.

Last off, with this on what got me thinking on Simple Business... and now this notion of facing the future. My own body of work is around exploring and advancing Virtue and Character as strengths in facing the future. They are vital. Yes, Character is vital. As is Purpose. That said, one big thing that is occurring to me in Joe's post above is the importance of 3 Virtues, in practice.

Asking “What might put us out of business in the next three years?” requires Courage, Openness and Discernment. It takes Courage to ask that question. It takes Openness to hear the real answers. It takes Discernment to explore those answers and their meaning for us.

I get Joe's admonition. And I suggest that we sharpen the blades on these three strengths, every step of the way... as both events and lifestyle. Practicing the Courage to question, the Openness to listen, and the Discernment to find meaning and solution... it is useful in getting to more constructive dialogue and to those better solutions, As some night say here in Newfoundland and Labrador, "In COD we trust" lol.

That all said, I also offer you this ICCCAN model I developed some years back, in case it helps. I find it a solid way to explore the COD.

In so taking Joe's thought and working it... we get better able at finding answers and solutions in which we can place and practice greater Trust.

In this world of challenge and opportunity, in the striving for a better future for us all... at school, work, business and community... our most audacious practice of Initiative in forging path forward might indeed best start with...

  • “What might put us out of business (at school, work, business, community, or planet) in the next three years?”

That kind of Initiative forges sustainable and sustaining solutions.
