Is Cocooning Changing Your Business?

My friend Santosh works in the insurance industry and relies on cold outreach to gain clients. He typically does 50 to 60 calls a day and books 5 to 10 appointments.

When I met him last week, he told me the appointments had gone down to 1 to 2. He was not really sure what was happening, but I knew it was cocooning.

Over a period of time, most of us have come to rely on emails and chats for our communication. But the more we depend upon it, the more we are cocooned inside our safe space or cocoon.

And we don't like sudden intrusions. Like a phone call from a new number or an email from a person that we do not know.

The pandemic made us even more reclusive and we cocooned even further. If we used to take random meetings in the past, we certainly do not do that now.

Making the life of salespeople tough.

If you are in the B2B space and you are in sales, your dwindling business meetings are directly connected with the cocooning phenomenon.

The only solution is to build relationships at scale using the power of social media.

But that does not mean your random posts or motivational quotes are going to convince your target to pick up the phone and call you.

You will have to use the Wheel of Persuasion and find the pain points in your industry. You need a framework that is based on your market sophistication.

And finally, you need a large number of eager readers who enjoy your message and are happy to share it with others. This is crucial because you cannot jumpstart an audience in a short time and hope to get enquiries in the short run.
