?? Coconuts, ?? Buses, ??Poo & ?? Bumblebees

Hello solution seekers! ?

This is just a small note to say thank you for reading The Solutionists.

In many ways, telling these stories and sharing them within our circles helps to elevate the work of young people who are fighting to make our world a better place.

As a one-woman band, it's been encouraging to see more and more people subscribe to the newsletter and reach out to share new stories, and feedback, about this publication.

The best part of my work is talking about change and telling stories from innovators who are making a difference. Feel inspired, stay informed, and be encouraged that there is some positive change in our world and it's not all doom and gloom.

Thank you for being solution seekers!

?? Mobile Laundry Bus

An old school bus in Atlanta, Georgia has been transformed into a traveling laundromat to bring dignity to people experiencing homelessness. With free laundry services, pop-up shower stalls, and even volunteer barbers, this initiative is more than just a place to wash clothes, it’s a mobile hub of hope and renewal. People can also receive clean clothes and have a chat about their situation, and this helps restore their confidence. ???

Nicky Crawford is the heart and soul behind this project. He ensures that people have everything they need, including toiletries, towels, detergent, and more. The service aims to empower those experiencing homelessness and is an additional to other similar solutions happening in places like the UK, Canada and South Africa.

?? Poo-Powered Cars

Here's an interesting twist in sustainable motoring, a VW Beetle powered by human waste is now cruising the streets of Bristol in the UK! Dubbed the Bio-Bug, this innovative vehicle runs on methane gas extracted from sewage, proving that even waste can be a valuable resource.

According to Wessex Water engineers, waste from 70 households per year could generate enough biogas to power the car for 10,000 miles (16,100 km) without all the nasty poop smells. https://www.geneco.uk.com/

The Engineers at the University of Warwick have come up with a hydrogen-powered race car built from repurposed materials, proving that the future of sustainable transport might just be found in the most unexpected places. ????

?? This Week's Solution Seeker...

Born in a small town in Sierra Leone, Alhaji Siraj Bah struggled to afford his school fees. But he was determined to change his future, so he took a factory job and saved just $20 as seed capital for something bigger.

With that small sum, he came up with an idea to tackle #plasticwaste and #deforestation. He began making eco-friendly paper bags from sustainable materials and later developed cooking briquettes from coconut shells as an alternative to firewood and charcoal.

In Sierra Leone, coconuts are a staple but as locals enjoy their flesh and refreshing juice, they also build up a lot of coconut husk waste. Instead of letting the husks go to waste, he is them into something useful. Alhaji’s journey proves that big change can start with just a small idea. https://www.euronews.com/culture/2024/12/09/watch-the-innovator-from-sierra-leone-turn-coconuts-into-fuel

?????? Endometriosis Trial Tests

Endometriosis affects up to 10% of women aged 15 to 44, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. It occurs when endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus, causing pain and complications. It causes painful periods, infertility risks, and symptoms that disrupt daily life. It’s also often misdiagnosed or dismissed within the medical community.

For millions of people with endometriosis, getting a diagnosis can take years of uncertainty, pain, and frustration. But an Australian medical technology company is on the brink of changing that—by launching a world-first blood test for endo as early as this year.

The test showed an incredible 99.7% accuracy in identifying severe cases, even when symptoms mimicked other conditions. Even in the early stages—when traditional diagnosis is toughest—the test remained over 85% accurate.

The company behind the innovation is now fine-tuning the test for real-world clinical use and are aiming for an Australian rollout in the coming months. This breakthrough, called PromarkerEndo, could mean faster answers, less invasive testing, and hope for those who have spent years fighting for a diagnosis. https://www.sciencealert.com/worlds-first-blood-test-for-endometriosis-step-closer-following-trial-success

???? Niger Eliminates River Blindness

Niger has made history as the first African country to eliminate onchocerciasis or river blindness. According to the WHO. It is only the fifth country worldwide to achieve this. This success follows decades of effort, including widespread treatment and vector control, which have reduced infections to nearly zero.

Caused by the Onchocerca volvulus parasite, river blindness leads to severe itching, skin issues, and even vision loss. With no vaccine or preventative drug available, this achievement is a huge step in the fight against one of the world’s leading infectious causes of blindness.

Eliminating onchocerciasis in endemic regions can take 10 to 15 years of medical treatment, along with vector control, health agencies report. Niger tackled the disease with intensive insecticide campaigns from 1976 to 1989. Then, from 2008, the country spent 12 years administering anti-parasitic medications to affected areas.

?? The Bumblebee Project

Scotland’s Bumblebee population has experienced a remarkable 116-fold increase in just two years, thanks to a dedicated rewilding effort. Bumblebees are crucial for pollinating plants, which supports biodiversity and ensures the production of many crops essential for food security.

In just two years of dedicated nature restoration work, the bumblebee population in the area soared to more than 4,000. The diversity of species also saw a remarkable boost, doubling from five to ten different types, according to the charity leading the efforts.

The Rewilding Denmarkfield project, located just north of Perth, spans 90 acres and has been focused on restoring natural habitats to green spaces in an area becoming more urbanised. This nature restoration initiative has successfully revived local biodiversity, with the bumblebee comeback being one of the most striking results. https://www.scotsman.com/hays-way/bumblebee-population-increases-116-times-over-in-remarkable-scotland-project-4882622
