5 Minute Read: Cocaine, Cash Flow, and Jesus Christ

I remember the first time I was taken into a small room and offered a pen-lid.

I’d just finished my bar shift and was taking my till back to cash office at a Manchester nightclub where I’d been working for a few months.

Man did I love the vibes, the people and the music.

As I entered that cash office, on top of the pen-lid being passed over to me by the DJ was a white powder being offered a little freebie for a job well done.

Little did I know that this spoon-fed freebie would soon hook me good, ultimately coming to control my bank account, my attention and the bulk of my life for years to follow.

Before I knew it I was dropping out of Uni to take up a role as manager of that same night club.

Six Months of exchanging all my wages for powder,

racking up lines and debt,

spending each weekend chasing…

the next high

the next thrill

the next exciting new experience

It looked so sexy & exciting but the reality was empty, dark and desperate.

Fast forward to the new academic year and I realised I’d been so obsessed with the thrills that I lost sight of what actually mattered.

I begged to get back into Uni but they made me re-sit - pay another year’s fees and start from scratch.

Why am I telling you this?

What does this have to do with growing a kingdom business?

Well, two words - head and heart.

As entrepreneurs we are typically paid how we use our skills, passions and abilities to serve others.

Which means than when our inner world is topsy-turvy you typically see a direct reflection of that in your cash flow.

Pash Flow (inner world) = Cash Flow.

Entrepreneurship can be so ego fulled that we can get ourselves hooked onto:

• The belief that we're a pretty big deal
• The sexy and exciting promises of quick riches
• The buzz of chasing the next dollar, deal or ding of the till
• The swoon of influencers pumping up our ego with nonesense.

Essentially it can easily become an addicts game.

(NB: It's worth bearing in mind entrepreneurship does tend to attract a fair few of the compulsive types)

And from one addict to another - What is the first step to staying clean?

Admitting you are not in control.

Admitting the hole you seek to fill is only filled by God.

In a word - Surrender.

You may not have wrestled with addiction like I have but I can guarantee you that you will make your self soul-sick if you don’t make a conscious effort, daily to surrender it all to God.

And back to Cash Flow for a second - the oft bandied around bad theology is that:

“Money is THE root of ALL evil” - Not in the Bible

It’s actually that the LOVE of money is A root of all kinds of evil. (1 Tim 6:10)

When we worship it…

When we fear being without it…

When we crave another bump of it…

When we get addicted to chasing it…

That addiction will cost us our peace AND cost us our cash.

We treat people poorly.

We get desperate in sales calls.

We make dodgy decisions for a quick buck

SO WHAT THE HECK DO WE DO?

Prayer - Chase God

People - Serve a Mission, not Money

Profit -? Build something sustainable which serves a burning need.

Trust me - you can make a load cash and lose too much.

But with God - you can attract wealth through service and surrender.

He gives us the ability to create wealth anyway, right?

As Jim Baker says “Kingdom Wealth is attracted, not pursued”.

So whether you are yet to launch or already running - make sure surrender is part of your business strategy.

TLDR: Chasing thrills leaves you empty. The God life brings profit.

• The 'Just Do It' approach tends to bring chaos
• Equally don't over-complicate things, get a plan and act.
• Get your idea in front of people of ASAP and test, re-iterate and evolve.
• “Think Big, Start Small” - Dream, but get really bloody focussed on next steps.

This is the formula I follow to help clients launch and grow a business with God at the centre

• ???? - Choose a set place & time to meet with God daily - it turns a routine into a ritual
• ????-? Go seek out people on the same journey. A rising tide gathers all ships.
• ??- Journal on this. "What is money, really?" and see what comes up.
