Cobbles!

Cobbles!

Well that’s part one of the gabion fence project complete. Just 2 more panels to do and about 2 Tonnes of cobbles to shift (ouch my back!).

These cobbles are from a former beach deposit near Lossiemouth, on the Moray Firth, NE Scotland. Please note it’s quarried and bought, not pillaged from the beach myself!

Now here is the interesting bit. I notice that the vast majority of the cobbles are granites and quartzites. But there is a small amount of limestone, possibly flinty and some mudstone. Of course this is a commercially graded (sized) product so I’m only seeing the size range 80-120mm.

In it’s current form my new “deposit” is quite well sorted, uncemented, grain to grain contact, high porosity and high permeability!

I wondering where the sedimentary lithologies originate from – perhaps remnants of now eroded younger deposits or from the sea bed?

Now here’s where it gets really nerdy. Since the gabion fence panel presents itself aa grid of neat rectangular openings, I going to do a “thin section” type point count to see what lithologies are present. TBC!
