Cobbler's Shoes
Recently, I have been laughing at my embarrassment at our own website. The old saying about cobbler’s kids having no shoes playing on my mind. The phrase is derived from the more original saying that…
“The shoemakers children go barefooted”
…meaning we spend all our efforts serving others through our craft and do little or nothing to support the very real and apparent needs of our own business.
Identifiable?
I’m sure this will resonate with people in our industry as it has been a perennial problem across every business I have worked in, large and small. It’s true in other industries too. Our site just didn’t reflect our personality. Have you tried writing about yourself and your own business? I’ve been procrastinating for a few years. I have sat down at the computer looking for inspiration. However, I’m soon distracted back into help our clients build their brand, which I find infinitely more enjoyable and rewarding!
Eventually, I had it pointed out to me how inadequate our website was. I have been working with a lovely lady, Jenny McCabe, a money mindset coach, who has since become a client of mine. She pointed out that I’d never get the clients I want with the website I have. Whilst I have lovely clients who I enjoy working with, I would like to attract more.
Brand New Website
As a result, it was the jolt I need but I didn’t relish the idea of doing a brief for my own site. I knew what I wanted when I saw it. So, I gave this very woolly brief to Joe Scales. We’ve all been there, your worst client brief – you know what we do, and you know what we’re like-and hey presto, a shiny new website that does what it says on the tin. Please don’t blame him for the copy which is all my own work!
Above all, I now feel equipped to go forward with a site I’m no longer embarrassed about.
If you’re procrastinating about your website and marketing, don’t put it off! Your online presence has never been more important!

3 年I’ve just had a chuckle. A few years back I gave a presentation entitled Cobblers’ Shoes on the subject of career management at Coventry University for the CIPD. I sized up the 100 strong eclectic audience and posed the question of one or two people: “So where are you from and what’s brought you along this evening?” It then dawned on me that the majority of those present were from overseas. English was not their mother tongue and they really didn’t have a clue as to what a cobbler was. My learning point was always know your audience. Hope you’re keeping well xx
