Cobalt Cyprus-China flights by summer 2017

Fledgling Larnaca-based Cobalt airline plans to have daily scheduled flights between Cyprus and China by next summer, chairman Gregory Diacou said on Tuesday.

“We are looking at three-four different airports in China, flights will be daily as from summer 2017 to different towns including Beijing and Shanghai,” Diacou also said.

A day earlier, Cobalt announced they had conducted meetings in Cyprus with visiting Undersecretary of Commerce in China, Zhang Xiangchen and his team to explore potential areas of cooperation between the two countries.

“During these preparatory meetings it was stressed that connecting the two countries with direct flights is important both for tourism and businesses in the two countries,” Diacou said.

“The Chinese Undersecretary is said to be very pleased with the progress and strategic plans of Cobalt,” he added.

Similar meetings were conducted between Cobalt management and the head of the Chinese embassy in Cyprus, during which details and logistics over creating direct flight paths were discussed.

At the same time, Cobalt also announced delivery of their second privately owned Airbus aircraft which has already carried out flights to Athens, Heraklion and Salonica. And it is scheduled to carry out its first Cobalt flight to London on Tuesday evening.

Before the end of the month, Cobalt expects delivery of another two privately owned aircraft – an Airbus 319 and an Airbus 321.

Cobalt had a rocky start this summer with repeated delays and operational problems mainly due to a delayed arrival of their own aircraft.
