COASTING AT WORK: What’s It Costing You? ??

Are you coasting at work and in life?

Many of you are doing this be honest with yourself!

When we coast at work, we’re often coasting in other areas: health, relationships, finances etc.

The cost? Higher than you think.?

Did you know that a large percentage of professionals coast at work?

Recent Forbes and BBC articles have highlighted the extend of this issue.

David, the VP of Customer Outcomes at a tech firm, came to me frustrated. Once highly engaged, he now found himself “just getting by.”

His motivation was slipping, he has been in the same company for a while that has gone through a lot of changes.? His brand as a leader was taking a hit, and it showed in his energy and routines.

Extra coffee to get going in the morning, junk food to cope, bingeing Netflix and scrolling after work just to unwind.

Coasting wasn’t just affecting his work—it was showing up in every area of his life.

?“I have gone from being a high performer to doing just a bit more than the bare minimum, I am complaining a lot more than I used to and I don't feel in shape.”

?? The Dangers David Faced While Coasting

  • Lost Growth Opportunities: Staying comfortable held David back from new challenges.

“I used to put my hand up for all the new projects, but now I can’t be bothered. I let my team get away with average performance.”

  • Impact on Personal Brand: David’s colleagues and boss noticed his diminishing enthusiasm, impacting his reputation and his team’s morale.

?“My boss noted that I’ve changed, and my team KPIs are starting to slide, and I am now worried that I might get laid off in the next round of job cuts.”

?? David’s Wake-Up Call: From “Busy” to Purpose

David had a realization: Am I leading with real intention, or just coasting through the motions? How much is this costing me? These questions shifted his mindset.

?? How David Got His Act Together

  • Shifting From Complainer to Creator: David reconnected with his love for leadership and customer experience. He created a development and strategy plan with his boss and his team.? This brought fresh accountability, energy and a clear plan to get promoted to SVP.

  • Taking Control of His Focus: He prioritized strategic projects that impacted not just his customer success team but other teams outside his remit: sales, product, support, renewals and professional services. He went from “being busy” to demonstrating to the board how his team had a direct impact on customer outcomes and value and the reason they should invest more in his team.

  • Small Wins, Big Impact: David tackled one new challenge each week: Speaking up in the weekly sales pipeline meeting, he met five customers each week, reversed mentored an investor, and put his hand up to chair the AI initiative to drive operational efficiency in the entire organisation.

  • Healthy Lifestyle Changes: David hit the gym, started running once a week, cut out junk food, reduced Netflix and limited alcohol to weekends. He had more energy at work, and he felt more present with his partner and kids.

? Are You Coasting? Ask Yourself:

  1. Am I just completing tasks, or am I truly engaged?
  2. Am I growing in my role, or just maintaining?
  3. Am I complaining or am I actively contributing to my team’s success?

This is really great Steve, it’s something we sometimes talk about and this is interesting to read the other side of it.

Insightful. I know so many people in this position. Honestly most of. As it is easiest way than to face new challenges and get a new excitement. I love new challenges. I am getting bored if i am just existing in one place. It is not for me. But when you are getting older you start to use to comfort more than ever.

Great article! sometimes it’s easy to just do the bare minimum as it still produces results. But spark is lost. For high performers, growth is as essential as oxygen.

Brilliant insights Steve! It’s a powerful reminder that growth often begins at the edge of our comfort zones. By embracing challenges and remaining curious, we’re constantly evolving both personally and professionally. Thanks for sharing this!
