Coaching through a pivot
Diann Wingert
Psychotherapist turned business coach for ADHD-ish business owners who want a stand-out, sought-after business built on their brilliance. Host of Top rated “ADHD-ish Podcast” (formerly The Driven Woman Entrepreneur)
One of my favorite types of coaching engagements is helping a neurodivergent entrepreneur pivot from a business that has served them, but no longer feels aligned with their greatest gifts and the contribution they want to make.? In many respects, its much harder than launching a new business,? because it can be challenging to objectively assess existing assets and painful to let things go that we have put a great deal of passion and energy into.? It was at this inflection point in her business that Angie Trueblood reached out for my help.??
Angie had a successful business, helping entrepreneurs, companies and agencies position their podcast pitches for ultimate results.? She built an excellent reputation by providing done for you services, but over time her business began to feel heavy and misaligned, reflecting her inner desire to pivot and grow in a new direction.?
When we began our 1:1 coaching journey, Angie was seeking more than just business guidance she wanted a trusted advisor, mentor and thought partner who was also twice exceptional (gifted + ADHD) who had already experienced pivots in her own business and knew how to help her clients navigate them too.? Angie and I had worked together when I was her client, so she knew I was the person for her.?
A Journey of Self-Discovery
Through our sessions, Angie gained clarity on her strengths and challenges, including the necessity of seeking an official ADHD diagnosis. She already knew she was gifted, but didn’t appreciate the importance of how both forms of neurodiversity impact her as an entrepreneur. This newfound understanding allowed her to reframe her approach to business and life. Angie realized that traditional business building recommendations didn't account for her unique needs and strengths and she needed to create a vision for her business that she would not outgrow.?
From Weaknesses to Strengths
One of the most profound shifts I witnessed in Angie was her ability to reframe past struggles as strengths. She began to see her entrepreneurial journey, with all its pivots, as a testament to her resilience and adaptability. This mindset shift has been instrumental in Angie's growth and confidence. Most twice exceptional entrepreneurs either become serial business owners or they learn to accept that they will feel the need for change and growth in their business in a different way than a neurotypical.? Accepting this and building her business vision around it gave Angie a new perspective on both her future and her past.?
Tailoring Business Strategies to Neurodiversity
Together, we co-created strategies tailored to Angie's ADHD,and her giftedness,? focusing on her gifts and passions. By embracing her neurodiversity, Angie's business began to flourish, aligning with her values and aspirations. She recognized that it was not only a preference to pivot and move in new directions, but a necessity.? I couldn’t say it better than she did: "I have ADHD :) and need to build a business around me, not the other way around." This epiphany has been a game-changer, allowing her to approach entrepreneurship with renewed confidence and purpose.
