It Does Not Matter How Slow You Go – So Long as You Don’t Stop
As my mentor, John Maxwell says "Leaders develop daily and not in a day" so personal development doesn't happen overnight and it is an Intentional journey that we have to take in order to grow more and be a better person.
Why this is necessary? - Because with the ever-changing business landscape we need to adapt and continuously learn new skills to be successful today and in the future. New technology & innovation is happening at rapid pace. Do you feel you are equipped or do you feel you need to learn new skills?
Born & raised in a developing part of the world Pakistan, I discovered an excellent opportunity for entrepreneurship and to create solutions that will help the community to grow.
After completing my undergraduate education, I, therefore, partnered with my friend to create a platform from where we can provide education and mentorship to underprivileged part of the society. As I started developing the platform, we both realized passion is not enough for success and I needed to learn the necessary business and communications skills to take that project further and impact significantly more individuals.
I understood that running a business required learning skills and this was the time when I invest more in my personal growth. I had to increase my leadership potential to grow further. I went to pursue a Master of Business Administration in North America to broaden my business acumen in a multi-cultural setting and further discovered that I had to improve my communication skills to effectively share my message with my audience.
While exploring I came across the John Maxwell team leadership training program; and became a certified Speaker, Trainer & Coach where I work with individuals and organizations to develop greater influence, impact, and help them achieve their dreams.
During the International Maxwell Certification program, I gave my 5 min pitch in front of senior professionals, faculty members, and fellow trainers. After my speech people asked senior trainer asked me, “Since when are you doing this training?”
I replied, “I have recently started doing this”. Everyone was very surprised & impressed.
The key learning was that It takes time to become successful but intentional steps on a daily basis will take us closer to our goals.
Transition your Weaknesses into Strengths
Public speaking is a skill that many individuals want to master. It is used in many aspects of our lives in academic, professional and even day to day lives.
This is the skill I wanted to improve but how to become better at "Public Speaking"?
I started listening to successful speakers and took the initiative to start speaking in academic and professional setting
Will it be easy the first time? No, it will be tough the first time. I have become better over time but does it finish my growth process. “Not Quite” I am taking intentional steps to continue improving myself and becoming a better speaker from yesterday.
What are you improving daily?
Self-Imposed Limitations
“Potential is a priceless treasure, like gold. All of us have gold hidden within, but we have to dig to get it out.” Joyce Meyer
Some of the reasons why we are not able to identify our dreams;
· Discouragement from dreaming by others
· Hindrance by past disappointments and hurts
· Habit of settling for average
· Lack of confidence needed to pursue dreams
· Some people lack the imagination to dream
Our Self-talk helps to shape our mindset & actions. What do you talk to yourself? Positive self-talk leads to
· Motivation, passion & open mindset
· Brainstorm innovative solutions for our problems
· Explore potential opportunities and develop plans around them
How do you motivate yourself during tough situations and limitations?
What you really want to achieve in life?
Have you ever felt, that you were fully prepared to do something but then it never happened? Any business idea, side hustle, etc
How can we overcome this? By developing a goal plan with set deadlines and measuring success after each interval. We continue the process by reflecting, readjusting, and following the plan will help us to fulfill our goals.
“If you can dream it, you can do it.” Walt Disney.
Who is keeping you accountable to your goals?
My mentor John Maxwell said, “People who lead themselves well know a secret: they can’t trust themselves.”
It is when you think you are untouchable that you learn how quickly you can be touched by poor choices.
Do you have an accountability partner or peer group?
I know for myself that just being aware of an upcoming session with my group allowed me to avoid acting upon poor decisions. At each session we had together, we had a list of agreed-upon questions that gave others permission to ask. Because we knew ourselves, the last question was,
“Did you lie about any of the previous questions?”
Thomas Watson said it so aptly, “Nothing so conclusively proves a man’s ability to lead others, as what he does from day to day to lead himself.”
Coaching has helped me to keep myself accountable to continue growing my speaking, training, and coaching business. This has resulted in starting the SkillRanch podcast and creating content to empower others to impact tomorrow’s work environment.
How are you keeping yourself accountable to your goals and dreams?
What is the great change you are destined to make in the world?
If you had $1 Billion dollars or you are a leader of a large organization or President / Prime Minister of a country;
What is the great change you would like to bring to the world?
We wait for the perfect moment to do something.
But “There is no perfect time.”
What small steps can we take to move a little step closer towards the great change we want to see in the world.
