Some weeks ago, I was invited somewhere to speak on Personal Branding. Although my audience expected me to talk about managing their social media pages with lovely pictures and nicely written quotes, all I did was to talk about branding using the value chain example.
Either consciously or unconsciously, the way we live our lives is driven by our values (WHO AM I), likes, dislikes, and ultimately our passion.
Our values control our decisions. As individuals, we have our own core values e.g if part of your value is learning and growth, you will see yourself taking a lot of courses, attending knowledge exchange sessions very frequently. This indirectly forms and sets your priorities which determines your DECISIONS, and then you take ACTIONS based on the decisions and gradually it becomes a HABIT. We do it to the extent that it becomes a LIFESTYLE that everyone around us sees it as our CULTURE (Way of life - doing things), for every action, there is a RESULT / an OUTCOME (the consequence is negative or positive). This forms the beliefs or opinions about us which leads to our REPUTATION. You can either have a good or bad reputation based on the result or outcome of your action. The image or impression in the minds of others about us is our BRAND.... and in the middle, we find the most interesting part.
At the end of the day, we realize that our VALUES will determine how people VALUE us. So, while we go on daily grooming ourselves and our brands, lets always remember to be consistent with what we stand for. For instance, I have seen a choir minister singing in a public bar, that got me confused. Our actions must be consistent with our value system. We demonstrate what our values are, the beliefs we have daily through our interaction with people, through the way we dress and communicate.
