Storytelling, Presenting and Public Speaking Tips
“People are not particularly interested in our ideas; they are interested in our experiences. They are not searching for theories but for convictions. They want to penetrate our rhetoric to discover the reality of our lives.”?From The Word in Life Bible Study
We all have opportunities to get up and speak in front of others. Sometimes just to introduce ourselves at a meeting. It could be a school meeting, church, work, or networking. Most of time you get 30 seconds to 3 minutes and while you are waiting for your turn your thoughts are putting together your introduction. What will I say, how will I say it?
If the leader of the meeting is experienced, they will set up guidelines for you. For instance, they will say in a moment we are going to go around the room from this table to that table and we are going to give our name, where we live, how long you have been here and something most people do not know about you! And I start off first.
Most the time that does not happen, so you now have to structure yourself. So, let us talk about a solid format you can use all the time, whether you have 30 seconds, or 1 hour to talk.
Learning these skills will help you develop in five different areas:
5 Key Skill Areas:
1.????Self Confidence
2.????Leadership
3.????People Skills
4.????Presentation
5.????Managing Stress
Your turn arrives and you stand up and begin to introduce yourself:
-????????State you name and where you live.
-????????How long you have been involved in this group!
-????????Tell us something most people do not know about you – and elaborate!
ü Believe it or not clearly stating your name and where you live has a purpose. It could be a great connection for you and someone in the group. They may be able to relate to you or live near you.
ü How long you have been at this group also has a purpose, if you are here since its birth – that ads credibility to you and the group – if you have been here a few months – new people will feel more comfortable.
ü It is not just for you.
ü Something most people do not know about you.
o??Telling a story about yourself is always an audience catcher. People love learning about other people, we are built that way! Stories give us gifts of knowledge, challenge us, and motivate us to do something.
Here are Five Secrets to being a great presenter:
#1 Preparation - Preparation Multiplies Self – Confidence
- Preparing is a considerate action toward your audience.

- Preparing is not memorizing your talk – it is creating a space to be conversational.
§?Who are you speaking with today?
§?What might your audience know about your subject?
§?Why do you think they want to hear you talk?
#2 Your Opening ?- Engage Your Audience
State your Name and where you live with confidence and how long you have been with this group. (Like you are sure of what you are saying. LOL) People are most likely to remember your name if you say it loudly.
This not only shows confidence, but it gets their attention.
Starting off with excellence will draw in your audience…even those who are yawning.
#3 – Forming your presentation! (This is where your story comes in.)
The Story is the incident, or the meat of your presentation – for this lesson you
will choose an incident in your life you would like to share.
-????????When you share with people something most people do not know about you, you are envisioning this fact in your mind. And the audience envisions what they hear as well. We listen in pictures! The more vivid the picture the more you will remember what you heard. Which is why it is SO important to always be aware of what you are saying.
-????????I might see myself drag racing in my 69 Camaro
-????????OR fishing in Wisconsin and catching one hundred of the tastiest Bluegills ever – which I must clean and prepare.
All the above came to my mind – like a movie – in a flash! When you aware of the movie playing in your head…. you just created your story.
#4 Take Action
Why would you want to challenge your audience to take action?
-????????Because what you are sharing influences the listeners to do something, if you challenge them, you give them a solid reason to change something in their life, to take action!
-????????It can be a simple as letting your audience know what you learned from this incident/experience and what they can learn as well.
