Coaching and Mentoring
Both coaching and mentoring are exceptionally valuable and effective forms of development. However many people use the terms interchangeably and there seems to be some confusion over exact definitions. My little contribution to the debate is attached here. There are undoubted overlaps with both types of development, but identifying the differences I believe is critical to helping you decide what you either need to receive or need to give.
Would love to hear what your thoughts and ideas are on the differences between these two vital forms of personal development.

5 年I work with a lot of Managers who like to tell me what they think when I never ask them but when I have a question they go into Coach mode because they never know the answer.

5 年Mark, That's a cool representation of Mentoring and Coaching. Here is my contribution to your effort. Coaching is all about getting the answers out of the Coachee and helping them decide their direction. Mentoring is about helping them with answers from the Mentor's past experiences (here is what I did when I was faced with this situation). Coaching teaches them how to fish while mentoring buys them fish. Each one is important depending on the situation. At the same time, the hardest thing for me as a Coach has been to hold myself back from giving answers and continuing to ask the right questions!

5 年My thoughts on Professional Difference in Mentoring and Coaching: Mentoring is pre requisite in the formative years of One's Career ( 1-3 years in to professional career) with more of soft skills counselling. Coaching relates to continual imparting of Job Specific Skill Sets......maybe my perception is wrong.

5 年It's jut not true. The future of coaching is mentoring. But it's about levels of cognitive complexity. Only low lcomplexity people will say "I" and mean it. Ask me if you want more info.
