"COACHING" INSTEAD OF "INSTRUCTING"
The greatest challenge I have found in helping Tai Chi and Qigong teachers become more successful is that they are eager to "instruct" their students. I had the same attitude for the first 10 or 15 years of my teaching career, but eventually arrived to the realization that coaching is more effective than instructing. Unlike giving the students "downloads" of teachings or techniques, coaching focuses on inspiring the students to understand through experimentation and self-discovery. As a coach, I can certainly share some principles and techniques, but those are also subject to testing, which gives the students much deeper understanding, since they begin to comprehend the cause and effect connections and the deeper meaning of each aspect of training. You might have heard me talking about coaching in the context of Tai Chi and Qigong for quite some time. I have been advocating for this approach ever since I pioneered the profession of Qigong Coaching in the early 2000's by integrating the ancient Energy Arts with the modern methodologies of High Performance and Life Coaching. And today, I am thrilled to give you the taste of the Coaching Season on my talk show The Secrets of Qigong Masters - one of our many seasons that is specifically dedicated to Coaching and its applications to Tai Chi, Qigong, and related disciplines. Roger Jahnke, Scott Sonnon, and Richard Strozzi-Heckler.
