CoachinG Generation Z ?

Coaching generation Z? have we realized that they are different,

Gen X is coaching to Gen Z

Wikipedia Defination of Gen Z, Wikipdeia statement, researchers typically use the mid-1990s to mid-2000s as starting birth years for Gen Z

How as a coach belongs to Gen X, we can coach Gen Z without connecting with them? we can not connect with them if we do not know what triggers them.

I was fortunate to take several sessions for several Gen Z team members. I have started understanding them more now. They way I work with Gen Y, same mechanism is no more working with Gen Z.So I started thinking more about them and understanding them better so that my coaching outcome become more effective.

All my tricks and techniques failing with Gen Z!! I am forced to started thinking different way!

  • They do not want to listen to your boring lecture!
  • They want fun in every now and then!
  • Their attention span in 10-15 mins !
  • They are always connected with Internet!
  • They spend good amount of time with social network!
  • They are ambitious and hardworking
  • They will keep changing their workplaces
  • They are all with entrepreneur mindset, so we have give such responsibilities and ambient
  • The prefer face to face communication and frequent feedback
  • We need to give them reward and recognition frequently ( May be a chocolate)
  • Freedom, Flexibility and Freedom, They want no bondage

Coaching all these team members without knowing their belief and value would not be effective.

Have you done any coaching with Gen Z like me? please share your thoughts...

Yes Chandan. Getting attention from Gen Zers and sustaining the same is very difficult task. Same old techniques would not work. Thoughtful. Thank you for sharing.

One another success factor is to keep training / coaching / mentoring sessions very informal and interactive to sustain attention. Also, the experienced trainers, coaches & mentors should invariably update their own skills and adapt to the culture of Z gen's and their perspectives (in short think & see differently or understand what they see & talk about). To be very honest, walk a mile in their shoes before even start a trailer session to teach/coach/mentor the Z gen. One need to be ultra-talented and the old style or methods won't work.

Currently I am a tutor at a community college, I can relate to you post. Although I some times have the privilege of working with older students, for the most part I work with younger ones (straight out of highschool). The trick for me has been to rid myself from negative stereotypes that society tends to create and recognize their individual potential. As society evolves, so does the way we interact and instruct/coach.

Yes I am. I currently coach several Gen Zers who hold management positions in business. I agree with your findings. While I have always been a proponent of experiential learning (the highest form of development possible) I find that it has had resounding success with them. I will also add that they are keen to learn from more mature, experienced business people, they are respectful of these "grey hairs" knowledge; they want challenge (which relates back to experiential learning); they want input and to be heard (which supports the old maxim that people don't need to have their way adopted but they want to weigh in so that they can buy in. Interestingly while each generation is unique and no doubt Gen Z will put their unique stamp on how the future will be, people are people and they fundamentally don't change. As a "grey hair" I have found an astounding number of similarities between Gen Zers and my own experience and values when I was their age.
