Coaching – To Be or To Do?

Coaching – To Be or To Do?

Question –?Which is the best choice during a coaching session- to be or to do?

Jennifer –?I really love this question and you’ll hear me talk a lot about it in the Powerhouse Coaching Club. First of all, it’s going to depend on what level of coaching you're at. It's natural for those coaching at the ACC or beginning level of coaching to focus on the “doing”.??When a client is paying us for a coaching session, initially we feel like we have “to do” - to perform and deliver value - in that coaching session. We’re looking for next steps, an action plan, literally a “to do” list for the client. So, in the beginning, don’t be surprised if you feel pressure to be more in a doing space.?

However, when you have been coaching for a while and you become more experienced - perhaps you are moving up the credentialing scale from ACC to PCC and then to MCC - you're definitely going to want to move to a "being state" in your coaching.?In a being state, we want to be present, be curious, be unknowing, be unattached. That’s how we step back and find ourselves super present in the coaching session.

When our coaching sessions transition to a being state, that's where coaching starts to improve for us and for our clients. That’s when the true power of our craft starts to show. It’s also when our sessions start to have a tremendous impact on our clients, and their referrals create a steady flow of new clients.

Love the idea of "being". Great concept for managers too!
