As a young professional, career transition was one of the most overwhelming and stressful experiences I had. To let go of my comfort zone and walk away from a career I was comfortable with, especially because I was so good at what I did. However, I am living proof that it can be done.
Whether you’re looking to take the next step in your current career field or completely change directions, there can be a lot to consider. It’s important to both assess your current situation and thoroughly research potential options before making any major decisions. With some preparation and guidance, however, the process of transitioning to a new career can be both successful and rewarding.?
Before transitioning to a new career, it’s important to identify what you’re looking for in your new career. Start by making a list of qualities or characteristics that you’d like in your new career, such as stability, growth opportunities, or freedom of creativity. Assess what drives you professionally and determine if a new career could provide those same motivations. Once you’re in the right frame of mind to make a transition, thoroughly research the field you’re interested in. Look into required degrees and certifications, the job outlook, salaries, networking opportunities, etc. The more familiar you are with the profession, the more confident you’ll feel in your decision to transition. It’s also helpful to connect with people currently working in the field to gain additional insight and advice.?
Once you’ve identified the new career path you’d like to pursue, establish a plan for yourself. One of the most important elements of your plan is assessing the cost of your education or training and exploring options for financial assistance. Other essential elements include A) gathering the necessary education, B) creating a timeline for yourself, C) networking and strengthening your professional presence, D) gaining relevant experience, and E) updating your resume.?
