Coaching the Big Questions

Coaching the Big Questions

As you coach yourself and others, the right questions trigger the best thinking.

What makes a question something you really want to stop, think about, discuss and consider a big question?

Here's an acronym for big.

The B is for BEAR UPON.

That is in what way is this question relevant? And to what is it relevant? What does it touch to? What are the larger issues that are involved in this question? What are its implications? What drives it?

What is its source? And where will it go? How will the answer to that question or just the seeking involved in asking it, change the world for you or for someone else? Bear upon.

The I is for I IGNITE.

Ignite. If it is a powerful question, if it is a big question, if it is a great coaching question, it will ignite something in all of the people who mull it over and consider it and follow it and think about it and try to answer it.

What does it ignite ?

G is for GROW.

How will this question help you and others to grow in your thinking, in the process that you apply to thinking in the issues you consider in your life?

I ask you today a big question. The big question is, is your next question a big question?

If it is, let's take all the time that's needed to work on it.

Big Questions

  • If you could solve one problem in the world today, what would it be?
  • If you could acquire one new habit, what would it be? Why?
  • If you could eliminate one habit, what would it be?
  • How would your life be different if you ... ?
  • What is the last thought, sound, song, or image you would like to experience as you leave this world?
  • What one word would you like to sum up your life and have everyone remember about you?
  • What would you like engraved on your headstone?
  • What is the title of your autobiography?
  • By what historical character would you like to be admired?
  • With what historical character would you like to be compared?
  • If you had a limited quantity of influence, how would you spend it?
  • How would you define "beauty?"
  • What is success?
  • What makes a person's life significant?
  • What could you do tomorrow that would affect the rest of your life for the better?
  • What is the greatest mistake you ever made and how has it made you better, more compassionate, wiser, or stronger?
  • Who helped you when you were down? How?
  • What is the next question you would like to ask?
