Coaching 3 People to $30k MRR (for free) - Week 3

What kind of content makes the most sense for this audience? And how can I build a system that can sustain that content machine indefinitely?

Hey! If you're new here – I'm coaching 3 people to $30k mrr and sharing the journey, wins and lessons. Make sure to subscribe here if you want to stay up to date on everything and grow your business alongside us.

Building a business is WORK.

Same can be said about creating content.

A lot of us just jump in and start building or start creating. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve evolved a lot — now a big believer in clarity and from that clarity making sure that we are aligned every step of the way.

Everything should connect. Who we are, what we create, what we want, who we are selling to, and so on.

For this newsletter I want to talk about clarity.

Why it’s important.

How to get it (I’ll give you a free tool).

And what to do once you have it.

I’ll walk you through the process that I followed with everyone for this $30k mrr series and how one person applied that clarity.

Clarity then Alignment

I’ve helped build, or grow, a lot of personal brands and businesses. My beliefs were formed from DOING — and those beliefs are simple.

My whole ideology centers around clarity and alignment.

Everything needs to connect. But what does that look like?

Who we are, what we want, our target audience, how we want to show up in the world, etc. That all needs to be in alignment and also needs to connect with what we create, how we make money, and so on.

Everyone is different.

A challenge model probably won’t work for a podcaster & podcasting agency owner if she doesn’t want to engage with her community often.

Selling courses may be hard for an entrepreneur if he views courses as a scam.

A speaker that values family time is going to be unhappy if she is always traveling on the road away from her family.

A mega-influencer that loves to create but doesn’t believe in their group program? They will probably have an easy time getting new members & a difficult time retaining those new members.

I believe that just about anything can work. Some routes will be harder than others. But pretty much anything can work. Which is a part of why being a creator and business owner is so hard. Because there are so many options.

That’s why overall alignment is so important. It helps us narrow down our options.

If there is a disconnect between who we are, what we create, and our target audience… the results will be minimal.

Not to say, that you can’t have success without total clarity or alignment. I’m proof that you can still have success. But when you are not clear, and not aligned, it causes strain somewhere. Like a web, or network, every area relies on another. For me, that strain manifested in two ways.

  1. Burnout
  2. Working myself back into a job I hated

Let’s help you avoid that, yeah?

How to Get Clarity

I will give you the tool that I used for my coaching for this newsletter. It’s a template I built out in Notion. In order to fill it out, you can either duplicate the template into your own Notion (free) account — you click the three dots in the top right corner after logging in and then hit “duplicate”. Or you can fill out all the answers somewhere else as you read through.

The only thing I ask for feedback after you complete all of the exercises. Right now, I think the biggest gap is understanding the next steps and making sure that everything connects after you go through the clarity exercises (which is what I’m there for). But I’d like someone to go through this and be able to connect the dots on their own.

Subscribe to my Newsletter here to receive the template. You should see it come through in about 15 minutes (after the welcome email).

Working with Jaleel

Jaleel is one of the people I am coaching. He has a sales background and I know he will be fine as he builds.

With him our main focus has been:

  1. Understanding where he wants to go
  2. How content will play a role in his business and how to use that content to make money/bring in more leads
  3. The systems behind the content
  4. The plan and flow for owned media

What He Does: Speaker, Facilitator and Breathwork Practitioner

Jaleel completed the exercise. From there I went through and picked out any “Red Flags” or things that I felt were not aligned. Again, we mainly focused on content (and the things leading into content). But for others, this was things like:

  • They identified as a certain archetype of creator (I explain this more in the free tool), but what they were currently creating was not aligned with that type.
  • The content they were creating had nothing to do with who they were selling to
  • No process around sales or marketing
  • Spreading themselves too thin
  • Not charging enough
  • Spending too much time on the wrong things
  • Not focusing on high leverage activities

With Jaleel, we talked over his answers. And he mainly had questions around the content. I tasked him with creating some concepts and bringing them back to our next session. When he came back with the ideas, we talked each of them over.

The main thing I was looking for was to narrow down options.

To do that I asked things like:

  1. Does this concept align with your creator type and how you’re wanting to show up in the world?
  2. Is this concept aligned with your target audience?
  3. What would it look like, to lead a follower to a sale? (For now).
  4. Which do you think would be the most fun for you?
  5. Which would bring the most value to your audience?
  6. Which would be the easiest to grow and achieve the goals you’ve outlined?

A few concepts didn’t align with his answers. So, we crossed them off. I won’t go into the specifics of his content concept — but as someone that has been creating pretty much my whole life, I’m really excited about what he’ll be working on (and when he is ready, I will share).

After that we discussed newsletter vs. texting. There are pros and cons for each of course. Both can get pricey depending on the size of your list (or how many messages you’re sending out to the whole list).

We looked at what he wanted to do, his target audience, the content concepts that we settled on, and what he wanted his future to look like. With that we settled on a text list to start. I’ll go into specifics later, but it’s simple and easy for him to execute (right now).

I sent him a basic content system.

Showed him how we could build upon it and systematize it as he learns what he will need for each piece of content.

We talked about the flow from content to list, and how to build.

He bought the equipment he needed.

And went out and executed on his ideas.

For [pretty much] everyone else, this process was a lot messier. So don’t worry if at first you have way more questions than answers.

Keep pushing for more clarity until you are happy with the direction that you are headed & the actions you are taking.
