Coaching continues to grow not just as a profession, rather as an entire industry. The growth is still vastly needed inside organizations. Leaders coaching their employees is an incredible opportunity for talent development & retention. Here is a simple list of things leaders can do to facilitate coaching successfully in 2023:
- Sit down with each employee and find out what their personal and professional goals are. We teach GOAL-Based Coaching and How to Coach to the Motivator.
- Sit down with each employee and find out what specifically motivates them. It is imperative they understand that not everybody is motivated by money or promotion. A great book to read is by
Julie Winkle Giulioni
who speaks of this in her book Promotions Are so Yesterday. It's Awesome!
- Make a list of all the goals and motivators for each employee and schedule time to use these understandings to become a true strength base coach always nurturing and asking about these understandings.
- Focus on the team positively-get employees talking about each other by simply asking questions such as "Bob, what does Lisa do extremely well as a teammate that she should be aware of?". The simple question gets teammates talking about each other positively and increases their likelihood for engagement and collaboration.
- Become a successful non-verbal coach-essentially get in the habit of sending out a note or card once a week specifically praising people for a job well done. The pwoer of the written works lasts longer then people think.
- Sit down with each employee and asked them what's the best way to give you feedback so I can successfully approach you when the feedback is positive as well as opportunistic where they can improve. This is called "co-authoring the feedback" and lends itself to greater reception of all feedback.
- Last, schedule time with each and every employee and use a conversation model (we teach a simple four step model) that makes your approach and conversations concise and focused on a specific area of work coaching needs to be applied. This ensures focus and consistency. If you do not schedule the time the time will pass by; therefore, employees will start to perceive leaders as not caring. It seems so simple yet if we don't schedule time work will always get in the way of relationships which lends itself to almost 41% of employees leaving organizations due to a lack of career development (McKinsey Study in 2022).
