Coaching 101: Culture Eats Strategy for Breakfast

How are you?

One of my coaching clients, a business owner, expressed frustration with his team's inability to execute strategies and processes effectively. We delved deeper, and what surprised us both was that it wasn't a competency issue. His team was skilled, but something was hindering their performance.

Here's where things got interesting. We discovered his authoritative leadership style had unintentionally created a stifling work culture. Imagine a team constantly needing permission for every decision, fearing to make mistakes, or lacking the confidence to share ideas. This fear-based environment shuts down creativity and initiative, essential ingredients for successful execution.

This brings us to the famous management quote by Peter Drucker: "Culture eats strategy for breakfast." In simpler terms, a strong company culture trumps even the best strategies. In our client's case, his top-down approach, while well-intentioned, wasn't fostering the right environment for his team to thrive.

We embarked on a coaching journey to shift the company culture. It wasn't easy. He began delegating more, encouraging open communication, and recognising employee contributions. Slowly, the tide turned. Team meetings became a space for brainstorming, not just receiving orders. Employees felt empowered to take ownership and experiment.

After several months, the shift was clear. Feedback from the team spoke volumes: "I feel valued for my ideas" and "We're finally working together, not just following instructions." The results? Increased efficiency, innovation, and a more motivated team.

The takeaway? Company culture thrives under supportive leadership. By fostering collaboration and trust, leaders empower their teams to not just understand the strategy, but actively contribute to its success. Remember, a brilliant plan is only as powerful as the culture that brings it to life.
