Coached Leadership Activities

A core component of the Leadership Studies Minor is that all students participate in at least one 30+ positional leadership practicum course with 30+ hours of leadership activities paired with an additional 30 hours of leadership and setting-specific instruction and coaching. My coached leadership experience was to serve as an Ignite Team Leader.?As an Ignite Team Leader, I served as a leader for incoming Freshmen participating in Ignite, a leadership-based orientation. Becoming a leader provided students with an understanding of how to lead individuals of similar age as you into a new setting while also teaching them vital leadership skills. In this setting, I led 17 incoming Freshmen through 3 days of leadership and service-based activities.

As a result of this practicum, I was able to grow as a student and a leader. I learned more about campus and events offered, but I was also able to learn a lot about myself as a leader. I enjoyed co-leading, which I was not sure that I would like. I also learned that I lead well through example. Serving as an Ignite Team Leader enhanced my leadership skills by placing me in a real-life leadership setting. It helped to strengthen my teamwork skills as well as my time management. I greatly enjoyed serving as an Ignite Team Leader and learning new things about my leadership style.
