Coach or Player: Tips for Being Completely Dispensable & Why

Dispensable? Isn't the goal to become indispensable to your operation? Sure, if your mission is corporate survival or to work forever. But in reality, freedom and opportunity come from the ability to walk away from your role without the success of the business being disrupted. Here's how.

I've been writing to the private B2B business owner recently, so here's some tips that you can put into play whether you are player or coach. Don't ignore the compounding effects of change. 1/365th of a move from status quo changes you 100% in just 52 weeks:

As an employee, it's natural to want to protect your job and ensure your own security. However, it's important to understand that becoming totally dispensable in your role is actually the best way to ensure your long-term growth and success. If you're an owner, being able to move on or help your employees to take a larger role is a crucial merit badge to earn.

Here are a few reasons why becoming totally dispensable in your role can be beneficial for your long-term growth:

  1. Cross-functional skills: When you become totally dispensable in your role, you are encouraged to develop a wide range of skills that can be applied in different areas of the business. This makes you more valuable to the company and increases your chances of advancement.
  2. Career advancement: By becoming totally dispensable, you open yourself up to new opportunities and responsibilities, which can help you to advance your career.
  3. Job security: Instead of trying to protect your job by only doing what's required, becoming totally dispensable shows that you are willing to go above and beyond, making you an asset to the company and increasing your job security.
  4. Adaptability: Businesses and the market are constantly changing, by becoming totally dispensable, you are showing that you are adaptable and can change with the times, making you a valuable asset to the company
  5. Continuous learning: By becoming totally dispensable, you will be continuously learning new skills and ways of working, which will not only benefit you but also the company.

It's important to remember that protecting certain interests for the sole benefit of job security is a short-term tactic, it might not be beneficial for the company and in the long run, it might not be beneficial for the employee's career growth. By becoming totally dispensable in your role, you are showing that you are a valuable asset to the company and you are committed to your personal and professional growth.
