Coach the person, not the story...

Coach the person, not the story...

The impactful coaching question that I’m sharing with you this week is going to land better if I give you a scenario.

So, let’s say your client comes to you because they are getting resistance internally from their team about the work you are doing together, and they are finding it difficult to confidently deal with these questions and objections.?

You have a number of options in terms of where to coach from. Let’s take a look at them:

Coaching in the story:

Who said what? What did you say? Why don’t they get it? Why is it a problem that they don’t get it? What should they be saying? How should they be behaving?

?

The coach is distracted by getting information from the client that only serves the interests of the coach. It doesn’t help the client.

?

Coaching for results:

Why did we decide to do this work? Why do you think it’s valuable? How are other people holding us back? How do we get them to buy in? Why don’t they get it?

?

The coach is worried that other people are going to hold us back from getting the results we have to achieve from our work together, which distracts us from getting to the real problem.?

Coaching the person:

What is making it difficult for you to respond to these people in the moment? How is this holding you back from growing in your role? If you could respond more confidently, what kind of impact would this have for you?

?

The coach is able to cut through the noise and see the real challenge that the person is having, thus coaching the person in the place that’s going to make the biggest impact for them, and by extension, the results from the work we’re doing together.

***

The key question in this scenario is?“what is making it difficult for you to respond in the moment?”?because it focuses the coaching on the person and where they need help.

?

As coaches and leaders, these challenge are unique opportunities to galvanise our relationship with the people that we are working with.

?

Every challenge brings an opportunity to coach the person.

Don't get distracted by the story.

Chris.

Those examples are really helpful, and I'm starting to look at this from an angle that I haven't in the past. Thank you Chris!
