?? Coach like Dr. Pareek: Unleashing the Power of Self as a Coach! ????
Dr. Carl E. Seashore, a renowned psychologist and educator, once said, "The best instrument to change the world is the self." This quote suggests that in order to effect change in the world, one must first work on themselves and become a better version of themselves.
In other words, if you want to positively impact the world, you must start by improving yourself. This could involve developing your skills and knowledge, cultivating positive habits and behaviors, and working on your own personal growth and development.
By becoming a better version of yourself, you can then use your own strengths and abilities to influence others and make a positive difference in the world around you. This could involve inspiring others to follow your example, sharing your knowledge and expertise to help others, or simply being a positive role model for those around you.
As Dr. Pareek's disciple, I wholeheartedly agree with the idea that personal transformation is a fundamental aspect of effective change management. My personal journey, growing up with a spiritual mother and agnostic father, shaped my rebellion against societal expectations and fueled my dreams of exploring the world and pursuing an MBA. These experiences have instilled in me a unique perspective and a desire to live in a world of possibilities.?
My journey in the field of OD began with your participation in a T-group experience with ISABs in 1993, followed by certification in AHRD and OD facilitation by Dr. Udai Pareek and Dr. T.V. Rao in 1994. These experiences laid the foundation for my work as an educator and change management practitioner. Collaborating with Dr. Pareek on conceptualizing the Udai Pareek HR Lab in 2004 further deepened my understanding and application of his teachings, particularly the OCTAPACE model.
Dr. Pareek's Perspective on Person-Centered Interventions and My Implementation as His Disciple?
Dr. Pareek has long recognized the transformative power of person-centered interventions in fostering personal development. As his disciple, I have embraced his philosophy and sought to implement these interventions—training, mentoring, and coaching—as pathways for growth and change.?
Training, the most widely used intervention, traditionally focuses on the work content area. However, I have learned from Dr. Pareek that a skilled OD practitioner can extend the impact of training beyond technical skills. By incorporating elements that develop functional and adaptive capabilities, training becomes a holistic and comprehensive approach to personal development.?
Among the person-centered interventions, the T-group stands out as one of the oldest and most powerful. Developed by Lewin himself, it aims to provide participants with intense -personal experiences that shed light on their interactions, self-presentation styles, life positions, values, and more. Initially used for team building and attitude change, the T-group unexpectedly emerged as a catalyst for profound personal growth.?
Drawing inspiration from facilitators like Jack Gibb, Will Schutz, and Carl Rogers, the T-group transcended its organizational context and became a transformative tool for individuals seeking developmental breakthroughs. As a disciple of Dr. Pareek, I recognize the immense potential of the T-group as a person-centered OD intervention in the workplace. It empowers individuals to bring their authentic selves to their professional roles, fostering a sense of congruence and fulfillment.?
While acknowledging the risks associated with the T-group, I approach its facilitation with great care and expertise. The goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where participants can explore their inner selves and expand their self-awareness. By embracing the principles of person-centeredness, I strive to guide individuals toward personal growth and enhanced performance.?
Dr. Pareek's teachings have instilled in me the belief that person-centered interventions when skillfully executed, have the potential to unlock an individual's true potential. Through training, mentoring, and coaching, I aim to create opportunities for individuals to delve deeper into their personal and professional development journeys.?
In conclusion, as a disciple of Dr. Pareek, I am committed to implementing person-centered interventions to foster personal growth and transformation. By integrating training, mentoring, and coaching, I strive to create meaningful and impactful experiences that enable individuals to embrace their authentic selves and thrive in their work and lives
During my visit to Florence, a city rich in history and intellectual exploration,? I began my transformative journey towards coach mastery, inspired by Dr. Pareek's teachings.?
This journey led to the conceptualization of the Udai Pareek HR Lab, where coaching and mentoring were introduced as subjects in the EMPI's Udai Pareek Human Resource Laboratory for Applied Behavioral Sciences. As a founding member, I've been associated with this initiative since its inception in 2001. My role as an adjunct professor in residence at EMPI allowed me to engage in one-on-one counseling and executive coaching, guiding students in their career choices.?
In 2011, I transitioned into an independent consultant role, focusing primarily on 360-degree assessments, IDP creation, and coaching. I gained valuable experience with various psychometric instruments, including FIRO-B, MBTI, and Dr. Pareek’s tools. During my tenure at Hay Group, as an independent consultant/coach, I utilized Talent Q for our clients while conducting assessment centers and developing IDPs.?
My journey in coaching certifications began with Marshall Goldsmith Stakeholder coaching in 2013. However, I realized that a mere two-day coach training was insufficient. Subsequently, in 2004, I completed an 80-hour ICF ACSTH coach training, which involved peer coaching practicums and group mentoring on ICF Competencies for ACC accreditation. In 2017, I obtained a 32-hour coach certification from Erickson Coaching India, a requirement for board coaching certification.?
After my coach training in 2014, I became passionate about introducing coaching in B-schools. Instead of using standard popular assessments, I chose to create a 360-degree instrument based on a survey project on future competencies conducted by my HR students. Additionally, I reached out to people on LinkedIn and offered pro-bono and paid coaching sessions, resulting in over 1000 hours of coaching experience. My coaching engagements mostly involved Executive MBA students in B-schools, career coaching groups through LinkedIn contacts, and Hay Group assignments.?
Nonetheless, my journey in coaching has been enriching, and I continue to be deeply inspired by Dr. Udai Pareek's legacy, striving to make a lasting impact on individuals' personal and professional growth through the power of coaching.?
?? Cultural Exchanges and Collaborative Learning: Enriching Perspectives During my visit to Florence, I had the opportunity to interact with Erasmus visiting students from Europe and USA USAC students. These cultural exchanges and collaborative learning experiences opened doors to new perspectives, broadened my horizons, and enriched my understanding of coaching and education. Engaging with students from diverse backgrounds and countries challenged me to adapt my coaching style and effectively work with individuals from various cultural contexts.?
?? Galileo's Thinking and Coaching Evolution Immersing myself in Galileo's thinking during my time in Florence was a turning point in my journey as a coach and educator. Galileo, the Medici family, Dante, Leonardo da Vinci, and Aristotle became sources of inspiration and guidance. I discovered that coaching had evolved from the profound questions posed by great thinkers like Socrates and Aristotle. Galileo's statement, "You cannot teach a person anything. You can only help him find it within himself," resonated deeply, emphasizing the importance of guiding individuals to discover knowledge and understanding from within.?
?? The Journey of Self as a Coach Understanding self as a coach is a dynamic and ever-evolving concept that lies between reality and possibility. It requires profound self-awareness of our strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies. By harnessing our talents, addressing challenges, and constantly self-correcting, we embody the true value we can bring to our clients. Self-reflection and exploration of our inner landscape are vital steps in our personal and professional growth, allowing us to move beyond the surface and authentically connect with our clients.?
?? Presence and the Inner Landscape The path to mastery as a coach involves delving into the depths of our own limitations, blind spots, and beliefs. Working on our inner terrain allows us to engage with clients at the highest levels, creating space for transformative exploration. Cultivating presence is a key aspect of this journey. Being fully present and engaged with the client requires practice, attention, and continual development. By cultivating our inner landscape and quieting the internal chatter, we unlock the ability to perceive nuances, patterns, and stories within our clients, leading to deeper insights and impactful coaching sessions.?
?? Embrace the Journey to Coach Mastery Join me on this transformative journey to coach mastery, drawing inspiration from Dr. Udai Pareek's pioneering work and the wisdom of Florence's intellectual legacy. Let us uncover the power of self as a coach, explore diverse perspectives, and cultivate presence in our coaching practice. Together, we can unlock the full potential within ourselves and our clients, making a profound difference in their personal and professional lives.?
