As a Coach, do you really KNOW about your topics, or do you just have an academic knowledge of them?

As Coaches we know in theory about many ways of living, working and being. But is that academic knowledge accurate? It reminds me of the story of a psychologist whose Mother had died. She was speaking to a Hospice nursing sister and mentioned that she was confused, overwhelmed, had volatile emotions, wasn't sleeping etc etc and she couldn't understand what was going on. " Well, that is grief" said the Nursing sister. The psychologist went pale as she realised this. she replied, "If this is grief, then I have screwed up with counselling patients who are suffering from grief! I never knew it was like this!"

She "knew" about grief academically...but she didn't really KNOW about grief. So are we maybe sometimes the same- that we know the theory, but don't really KNOW our topic? How can we get around this?

Great insights Cherri. For a long time I have been conflicted about the blend between the knowledge and the experience and how to authentically coach that resonates with your client. Great piece of advise.

I like to promote the opportunity to create learning organisations. I think i was first influenced by Donald Schon and latter the Ideas of Peter Senge's work and providing the space for people to learn and grow is critical as professionals. In the Human Services and Health sectors we like to promote theory to practice and the opportunity to engage in reflection, to facilitate building confidence and capability. As a leadership coach I am mindful of this when working with new and aspiring leaders! ??

What made me to be a coach was what I went through Cherri Forsyth Absolutely tge knowledge that comes from experience is not comparable with theory!
