CO2: Too much in the air and too few in the market

CO2: Too much in the air and too few in the market

What an era we are living in!

It doesn't pass a single day without having to consider if our lifestyle will ever go back to its pre pandemic and pre war (or special military operation?) self!

This morning I was browsing my feed and my attention was caught by one particular news!

It seems that the producers of mineral water are having troubles in purchasing CO2 for their sparkling water

A good old glass of cold sparkling water it's really a bliss with the heat that some parts of the planet are experiencing.

However, hopefully just temporarily, we won't be able to find this product on the supermarket's shelves anymore, at least in Italy.

What's happening?

Alberto Bertone, President and CEO of "Acqua Sant'Anna", a company based near Cuneo in northwestern Italy and the major european producer of mineral water with a production of 1 and half billion bottles per year, said that:

It's impossible to find CO2, not just for us but also for our competitors

So, according to different news outlets, the production lines for the sparkling water are closed and, once the supermarket's warehouses will run off of this product, we won't be able to buy it anymore.

The companies operating in this sector are not having a great time!

The sourcing of CO2 is not the only problem they are facing:

  1. Increase of raw material's prices
  2. Drought

Is the situation really that gloomy?

Well, the drought is a very serious problem concerning all of us. The increase of raw material prices is also a problem that should concern all of us.

However, regarding the CO2, saying that it's impossible to source it equals to a half truth.

The suppliers of CO2, in fact, prefer to sell it to the healthcare industry.

Will the situation change?

Producing CO2 requires a lot of energy and most of the supply is transported by sea.

The cost of energy and the bottlenecks at sea are real problems, and we cannot foresee when (and if) the situation will get better.
