CO Safety Awareness Month

CO Safety Awareness Month

Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month is an annual observance dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning during the month of November. This year we are joined by Louise Kellar from UEi Test Instruments to educate the public on the sources, symptoms, and prevention of CO poisoning, as CO is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly if inhaled in large amounts.

Key Points of Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month:

  1. Education on CO Sources: CO is produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels in appliances like gas furnaces, stoves, water heaters, fireplaces, and cars. Awareness month highlights the importance of knowing where CO can originate in homes and businesses.
  2. Symptoms of CO Poisoning: It can mimic flu-like symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, confusion, and nausea. Severe exposure can lead to unconsciousness or even death.
  3. Preventative Measures: Install CO detectors in homes, especially near sleeping areas. Have fuel-burning appliances inspected annually. Avoid the use of generators or grills indoors or near windows. Ensure proper ventilation in spaces with fuel-burning appliances.
  4. Emergency Response: People are encouraged to leave the area immediately and call emergency services if CO detectors sound or if CO poisoning is suspected.

This month serves as a reminder to take proactive steps for CO safety, especially as cooler months approach and the use of heating appliances increases.
