Co-Creating Our Path Forward – Participatory Strategy Development

At Conzylum, our most prized asset is our people. It's through their collective efforts that we've earned our reputation as a premier provider of tailored insurance and reinsurance solutions, a trusted IT service partner, and an innovator in the world of insurtech products. Recognizing the invaluable insights and perspectives that our diverse workforce brings, we embarked on a journey to refine and formalize our mid-term corporate strategy, aiming to engage every member of the Conzylum family in shaping our future.

In this article we wish to share with you our strategy development journey, how we involve people constantly, developed a so called Delta Diagnosis which is guiding us and allows for measuring our progress, and what our next planned steps are.

1. Aiming for Alignment & Involvement

In March 2023, we initiated a company-wide endeavor, communicated our intent, and invited passionate colleagues to join our dedicated project team. Comprising representatives from project teams, administration and management, this collaborative group is at the heart of steering our strategy's evolution.

2. Understand the Now - Design the Future

The project team launched a carefully designed questionnaire to reveal challenging aspects that need our attention. The level of honesty and transparency that emerged from our workforce was truly inspiring. It laid bare a spectrum of challenges that our colleagues are facing. As an example, we discovered where our processes lack transparency and efficiency. Leveraging a diverse toolkit that included analytical methodologies as well as creative, socially-engaged exercises like theater games, we dissected this wealth of information in a one day workshop. The culmination of these efforts was a well-defined set of strategic and operational goals. A special thank goes to Miriam Strolz and Laura Fuhlbrügge who supported us in designing and facilitating the workshop.

3. Visibility and Measurability of Progress

Our strategic goals guide us as we navigate our path forward, while the operational objectives provide a tangible framework to gauge the impact of successful execution on our day-to-day activities. Take, for instance, the goals for our processes:

Strategic goal:

  • Our processes are accessible, understandable, regularly reviewed, and traceable.

Operational goals:

  • I find the information for processes that I need.
  • I can track the progress of an ongoing process.
  • I have clear processes for my daily work.
  • I can influence and co-design processes relevant to me.

Building upon this foundation, we crafted a follow-up survey rooted in these goals, designed to be administered every 9-18 months. This iterative approach allows us to measure our advancements and continually adapt to evolving needs. Recently, we conducted the survey – which we call Delta Diagnosis – for the first time. Even though we were aiming for more, we are quite satisfied with a response rate of 74% during the vacation period. Mainly employees being less than 2 years with us did not participate as much. We will try to better integrate this group in the future. The evaluation of the results, which is currently underway, is already giving us some pointers on how we can improve in this regard as well.

4. Plan and Implement Measures

Looking ahead, we're excited to convene another workshop in September with our dedicated project team. This session will harness the insights from both the current and prior surveys, driving the development, prioritization, and planning of targeted measures that will guide our ongoing journey. Further, we consider restructuring the strategy development’s project team to sharpen the responsibilities, activities, and competences for the next phase, aiming primarily on the development of our company. It is eminent for us that also this phase is driven and supported by our entire workforce.

We cordially invite you to join us on this collaborative expedition, as we collectively forge a resplendent future for Conzylum – a future marked by unity, purpose, and the remarkable potency of our combined efforts.

Reach out to Jo?l Rühle , Head of Organizational Development at Conzylum, in case you wish to know more about our journey.
