Co-creating the Future of Work - Decoded
The working class has had to go to a ‘place of work’ for nearly two centuries, because the tools of work were located in the ‘place of work’. Initially, to factories and later to offices. However, the tools of work today are mostly in people’s pockets, i.e. in their mobile phones. A large majority of the working class today can work from anywhere due to technology proliferation. This has called for a fundamental shift in the way workplaces are imagined and designed.
Till recent times, the general expectation from an Architect was to design good spaces. Knowledge and experience of space planning, materials and a good sense of design was sufficient for most Architects to come up with good designs. However, the expectation is fast changing, especially with technology integration in each and every aspect of our lives. Architects will be expected to have good knowledge and experience of dealing with technology integration in designs. The role of an Architect is fast changing from being the whole and soul of spatial design to being part of a wide array of players. While this is not bad in itself, the Architect is well positioned to play an integrative role in the design process and this will happen only when the Architect equips himself/herself with the knowledge and experience of technology and an understating of social science.
