CNU.31 Charlotte is just around the corner!

The Annual Congress hosted by the Congress for the New Urbanism is an event we look forward to each year. It is a chance to gather with CNU Members and supporters from different (but related) disciplines, while experiencing a new city with developments that exemplify New Urbanism in action. During the five days of the conference, attendees can engage in thought-provoking workshops, walking & bike tours, urban sketching sessions, discussions and more. It is an opportunity to witness unique perspectives come together constructively to explore our common goal of making our cities more livable, walkable and diverse.

This is exactly where we want to be as New Urbanists: where changemakers and thought leaders cross paths to share ideas, challenge expectations and forge exciting new paths in the practice of urban planning, design and neighbourhood development. This is the second in-person Congress since the pandemic and we are excited to share in the energy of the event while learning more about the urban history unfolding in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Belmont, Davidson, Huntersville, Cornelius, Birkdale Village, Baxter Village, Antiquity, First Ward and Vermillion are all first-generation New Urbanist developments and towns with form based codes since the early 1990s. With our fellow attendees, we will be able to hear first- hand reflections from developers and designers who shaped these projects over the past three decades.

Here are a few more exciting facts about Charlotte:

  • We will be within 2 hours of other cities/towns that are moving towards New Urbanism (for example Asheville, High Point and Greensboro)
  • Charlotte is investing billions of dollars in transportation infrastructure as part of their commitment to walkability.
  • The city is growing quickly while applying new urbanist principles in new developments - the future is bright and filled with walkable urbanism.
  • There are 10,000+ new residential units in close proximity to the South End light rail station areas and over 3.8 billion dollars of investment in its first transit corridor.

So as we get ready to make new memories at this year’s Congress, we will leave you with one of our favourites from last year, CNU.30 Oklahoma City: The Wheeler District.
