CNPC Drills 2,000 mts in a single day in Ultra-Deep Exploratory Well

China seems to be breaking all the previous records of oil and Gas exploration. After setting a record of making hydrocarbon discoveries in multiple wells with a depth more than 10,000 mts, it has created a record of drilling more than 2000 mts in a single day, that too in ultra deep well.
China’s CNPC (China National Petroleum Corporation) has made a technological breakthrough at an ultra-deep well on near the Taklimakan Desert in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Region by setting a new daily drilling record of 2,006 meters in a single day. The daily drilling speed for excavating ultra-deep wells in China has been repeatedly surpassed, breaking the previous records multiple times.
The record was made while drilling of an exploratory well "Ha 13-H9" in the Tarim Oilfield, located in Shaya County of Aksu Prefecture. The well was drilled up to a depth of 7,341 meters. The daily record was achieved earlier during the drilling process at this site. CNPC has increased the drilling speed at the Tarim Oilfield, reducing the drilling cycle by over 20 percent. The progress in this field has been crucial in facilitating the exploration of deep-earth oil and gas in China.
CNPC's Tarim Oilfield is supplying natural gas to more than 120 cities in 15 provincial-level regions across China. The increased drilling speed has helped in improving overall efficiency of the operations.
Technological research of last two years of have reduced the drilling time for a well in this block from about 139 days in 2022 to 120 days in 2023, saving of little over 18 days for drilling an 8,000-meter well.
The record was possible due to major technological developments made in key technical equipment, including high-strength drill pipes, high-temperature-proof drilling fluid that can withstand heat of 425 degrees Fahrenheit, and state-of-art logging tools capable of operating thousands of meters below the surface level at such high temperature.
These advancements have provided essential technical support for developing deep-earth oil and gas exploration in China.

China has developed a domestic 175 Mpa gas wellhead equipment with a casing head, addressing the challenges of exploring and developing ultra-deep gas.
This is not the first time China has achieved something?extraordinary?in hydrocarbon exploration.?The ultra-deep oil well drilled 10,000-meter depth mark in 279 days of drilling.?This was China’s first well to exceed a vertical depth of more than 10,000 meters.?
It has the record for the deepest well in Asia and the world record for the shortest time to drill a 10,000-meter deep well. With a designed depth of 11,100 meters, one ultra-deep well in the Tarim Basin explains China’s efforts to expand domestic oil production.
The difficulty increased exponentially as the depth increased.
China has independently developed first in-house automatic drilling rig to reach 12,000 meters. It involved technology such as ultra-high temperature drilling fluid, ?high-strength drill pipes and logging tools capable of operating thousands of meters below the surface..
It shows that China has independently overcome the bottleneck in extra-deep well drilling technology and that its deep-earth oil and gas drilling capability and supporting technology have reached the international advanced level.
Hope, the new technology will help deeper and faster exploration for oil & gas in other part of the world.
