[CMSC News] March 2024: Exploring Caring for Others and Self-Compassion
Center For Mindful Self-Compassion
Experience the proven power of self-compassion.
Hello Friends of Self-Compassion,
Caretaking in personal and professional spaces forms the backbone of relationships, families, kin groups, and communities. Our individual wellness intertwines with collective care and sometimes when we’re in caregiving roles, we can feel a great deal of pressure to meet ongoing needs even when we ourselves are in need of care.
Some of my toughest moments involve acknowledging my human limits in offering care to others. Mindful self-compassion has guided me through these challenges, allowing me to embrace my needs and vulnerabilities with kindness. It’s helped me acknowledge the importance of nurturing myself amidst caretaking demands, fostering resilience for both myself and those I offer caregiving.
As we observe International Women’s Day this month, we acknowledge the unique gift of caregiving often associated with women while also recognizing that caretaking knows no gender bounds. Throughout this month, we invite you to join us in engaging in sustainable self-care practices that truly nourish and rejuvenate our beings in moments of struggle.
With kindness and gratitude.

Planning and designing a self-compassion intervention for family carers of people living with dementia: a person-based and co-design approach
National Library of Medicine — Caring for a family member with dementia often leads to significant emotional and psychological stress for the caregiver. Recognizing this, a study was conducted to develop a self-compassion intervention specifically for these caregivers. The intervention was designed with input from caregivers themselves, ensuring it directly addresses their unique needs and challenges. This approach not only aims to reduce the psychological distress associated with caregiving but also to empower caregivers with tools for self-support, underscoring the critical role of self-compassion in their mental and emotional well-being.

Think of all the generous, kind people you know who constantly give compassion and care to others, yet continually beat themselves up. Most of us are quite practiced at being supportive and giving to others, especially those of us who find ourselves in caregiver roles. Whether we have a special needs child, a parent with Alzheimer’s, an ill partner, or are in a caregiving profession such as being a doctor, nurse, therapist, or teacher, we know to give support, comfort and compassion to the people who need us. But how many of us offer that same level of compassion and care to ourselves?
Whether caring for family members or professional clients, if caring just goes one way - out but not in - you will eventually become drained and depleted. Self-compassion is crucial for caregivers because it allows us to resource ourselves so that we can sustain giving to others without burning out.
This workshop will present theory and research on the key role that self-compassion plays for caregivers. A variety of practices will be taught that can help individuals maintain equilibrium in difficult caregiving situations. We will also explore how to meet our needs in a balanced and fulfilling manner.
