A Clubhouse Full of 9-Figure Earners

“There’s a sucker born every minute.” - PT Barnum
There’s always been a ton of noise in social media to weed through when you’re looking for high-quality, actionable content amongst the people who are out there “crushing it” and “killing it.” It’s just a lot faster to scroll past the pictures of someone standing in front of an exotic car and someone’s mansion than it is to sit in a Clubhouse room that looks like it will be really interesting only to hear about all the 9-figure earners….Let’s be real - if every one of these 9 figure earners really existed they could ban together and pay down the national debt.
Seriously, there’s a real problem with a large portion of the content being delivered here and the people delivering it.
· There are “experts” espousing theories and pumping up dreams and killing others with zero fact-checking or knowledge base.
· There’s no vetting on who an “expert” even is. (Meantime these experts are selling coaching programs in the thousands of dollars to hundreds of people with merely a dream, and no idea how to start... let alone operate a business).
· The profiles aren’t even tied to LinkedIn – while puffery goes on in resumes, it’s at least tied to companies that can be looked up.
Set aside all these issues and the most fundamental problem I have is that we’re just not being real and truthful. Being an entrepreneur is hard.
If it weren’t hard, then everyone would do it.
More than 20% of businesses fail in the first year, and it’s not because they didn’t listen to a Clubhouse expert – sometimes the idea just isn’t right.
The irony to all this (and the silver lining that Clubhouse can be REALLY valuable) is that some of the greatest statements about entrepreneurship were from an Elon Musk guest appearance on Clubhouse. He said, “doing a startup is like eating glass and staring into the abyss for a long period of time.” And, “[i]f you need encouraging words, don't do a startup.”
Now, this post isn’t an indictment of the entire Clubhouse platform because there are some GREAT rooms and content being shared. Being able to hear Elon Musk or Simon Sinek and other amazing speakers or join rooms where people are providing real business tips in this open format is absolutely incredible, but we need to stop the charlatans perpetuating the “dream.”
In the immortal words of MTV Real World – it’s time to find out what happens when people stop being polite…and start getting real.
Now that would be actionable content.

4 年I have to agree with you Marc Snyderman! I decided to attend a “masterclass” on Clubhouse that turned out to be a “masterclass” on Instagram that was led by a woman that said Instagram was at least a $1 Billion company. ?? If you’re an Instagram expert, you should know the company is owned by Facebook. That may not be a basic fact for the guy on the street but it is for someone selling a masterclass.

4 年I agree with much of what you have said. I know there are posers I’m sure but I also think people should have enough sense to do their due diligence or be willing to accept the consequences. There are many great rooms with truly great business advice and insight. I’ve learned from many of them. There are also many great rooms and not so great rooms on mental health and mindset. Divorce, comradarie, goal setting, vision, etc. I’ve hosted some of all and listened to more. I think it is a great resource and way to connect with people that have mind for community and bringing value to the world. Each time I go with my intention set to that as the minimum. I hope to both give and receive. And when it’s not found, “leave quietly” and double tap amd swipe are happily found. Would love to connect there. I’m @christinadawn I’ve found the need to have intention in the time spent and intention on my reason for being there each time.

4 年Marc, great commentary. Ine reason for Corporate Thought is to unmask the not so glamorous side of being an entrepreneur - the late nights, worry, “borrowing” from your IRA, maybe even couch surfing because you spent your last dollar! We need more honesty and less inflated egos showing a pic of a Lamborghini claiming it’s theirs from just an “easy” forex play or crypto investing or following someone’s no fail program. Yes, Clubhouse like all social media can be full of these ridiculous stories but it is nice when you find honesty and truthful telling of hardships and overcoming obstacles! Here’s to less of the former and more of the latter!
