Club Employers On The Head With Impact To Overcome Job Search Ageism

Employers aren't impressed by your responsibilities and experience. They're impressed by impact.

Almost every other candidate presents responsibilities and experience in their resume and interviews, hoping it will impress employers, with a goal of showing that they're qualified.

I'll bet you do this too ... because it's how most career coaches, authors, outplacement firms, friends/mentors, and other career resources have taught you, ever since you first stepped foot in a college placement office. Professional resume writers have been trained/tested to write resumes that show a candidate is qualified.

But when you're 40, 50, or 60, being qualified is no longer enough ... employers expect more. Why wouldn't they expect more, as they expect you'll require higher compensation with all your experience?

Plus, when you face a great amount of competition, like during The Great Resignation, you're applying along with many qualified candidates, many times more than an employer will interview. When everyone appears qualified, qualified = average. And while responsibilities/experience describe what you were supposed to do, they force employers to guess how well you did it.

Were you a superstar, or an underperformer? Hiring managers can't tell, because responsibilities/experience doesn't tell them.

Combine this with employer perception that you're more expensive if you're over 40, with many years of experience (and raises). What they can't see is that you're worth the additional cost. You know you're worth it, but you're making employers guess.

It's the top reason hiring managers choose less expensive and less experienced new hires instead of you. If they can't see you're worth it, it makes sense that they choose a cheaper option.

What can you do to overcome this? Prove you're worth it, by overwhelming employers with impact.

Clubbing an employer over the head with impact proves your worth it, by showing employers how you've consistently improved the performance of teams, departments, and companies.

And it's one of the two main items employers use to determine who they'll hire among many qualified candidates: 1) Do you understand and have already solved my current priority problems (rarely in the job description); and 2) Do you have a strong track record of improving performance of teams, departments and companies?

I help people solve the most difficult job search problems, including getting past ATSs, ageism, remote positions, product/job function/career/industry/ geographic change, job search acceleration, unemployment, "bouncy" recent career path, job search turnaround, seeking raise/promotion, industry in decline/consolidation, long term gaps, family leave, or other of the most challenging job search issues.
